In continuation of its commitment to patient education focussed on proactive, preventive healthcare, Medanta (www.medanta.org) in collaboration with Broncos Services Pvt Ltd., a leading medical assistance company (https://www.broncosservices.com/), under the aegis of Athletic Federation of India organised the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Stadium Run 2020 to spread awareness on Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day. The first-of-its-kind run spanning 14 hours and over 2000 participants (colorectal cancer survivors, school students, athletes and working professionals) was flagged off by the renowned Indian cricketer, Mr. Virender Sehwag and Mr. Chander Bhan, DCP, Gurugram.

1st March is celebrated as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day globally. Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is amongst the most common causes of cancer deaths in India. The marathon focussed on encouraging and educating people about the disease to help prevent and manage it. It also highlighted how a healthy lifestyle comprising physical activities such as running and walking can significantly reduce risk and safeguard against colorectal cancer. The marathon consisted of team relays, a colorectal cancer walk and solo runs.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman & Managing Director, Medanta said, “There is an urgent need for awareness of colorectal cancer as preventable and treatable.  The Medanta Gurugram Stadium Run 2020 is a representation of our collective fight against colorectal cancer, focussing on the need for a collaborative approach towards fighting this fatal but preventable disease.’’

Mr. Virender Sehwag added, ‘’Physical activity plays a crucial role in preventing various lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and a few cancers including colorectal cancer. There are studies which have shown that engaging in vigorous physical activity for 45 minutes a day and 4 hours a week can have a significant preventive effect on colorectal cancers.’’

Mr. Chander Bhan, DCP, Gurugram said, ‘’I would like to congratulate Medanta and its partners for organizing the first Gurugram Stadium Run focusing on such an important cause. I am sure that this collaborative effort will help in creating widespread awareness on colorectal cancer.’’

Dr. Randhir Sud, Chairman, Institute of Digestive Sciences, Medanta said, ‘’There needs to be emphasis on screening for colorectal cancer. It is mandatory to undergo screening for this disease post the age of 40 years in the US. Setting screening protocols in India especially among high-risk patients can significantly reduce the disease burden.’’

Dr. Adarsh Chaudhary, Chairman, GI Surgery, GI Oncology and Bariatric Surgery , Institute of Digestive and Hepatobiliary Sciences, Medanta said, ‘’Unlike other cancers, the long-term prognosis in colorectal cancer is very good, especially if detected at an early stage. Consuming a healthy diet, being physically active, quitting smoking and limiting the intake of alcohol can go a long way in preventing this disease. Modifications in diet and lifestyle can substantially reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and complement screening in reducing the incidence of the disease. Though the treatment facilities are improving, primary prevention and screening for early detection are areas which need a stronger focus.’’

Dr. Amanjeet Singh, Director & Head of Colorectal Surgery, Department of GI Surgery, Medanta added, “Although, colorectal cancers are not talked about widely, they are increasing at a rapid rate in India and will soon become an epidemic if not tackled now. The Medanta Gurugram Stadium Run 2020 is an initiative in the direction of raising awareness against this disease and its prevention. It is imperative that we realize that certain factors in our lifestyle make us prone to developing this grave disease. Except for the genetic factors that we inherit, many risk factors are modifiable and therefore, this is a potentially preventable disease.’’
