What emotions or reflections do you have about passing the entrepreneurial torch to the next generation in your family?
Reflecting on this journey fills me with immense pride and gratitude. My father, Dr. PD Vaishya, was the trailblazer—the very first doctor in our family—who ignited a passion for medicine that now runs deep in our veins. Seeing my son, Dr. Abhishek Vaish, embrace this calling as a third-generation orthopaedic surgeon is profoundly rewarding. It is not just a passing of the torch; it is the continuation of a legacy built on compassion, service, and excellence. Witnessing the next generation uphold and elevate these values assures me that our family’s commitment to healthcare will continue to touch countless lives.
You come from a strong healthcare legacy—what core values or philosophies from your first-generation leadership have you carried forward in your journey?
The foundation laid by my father was built on unwavering integrity, empathy for patients, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. He taught us that medicine is not merely a profession, but a lifelong commitment to healing and service. These core values of compassion, ethical practice, and continuous learning, remain at the heart of our family’s approach to healthcare. We strive to treat every patient with dignity and to always place their well-being above all else.
What were the biggest challenges you faced stepping into a leadership role in a legacy business, and how did you overcome them?
Stepping into a legacy as rich as ours brings both privilege and pressure. The biggest challenge was living up to the high standards set by my father, while also carving out my own identity. Balancing tradition with the need for progress required thoughtful adaptation. I overcame these challenges by staying rooted in our core values, seeking mentorship from elders, and embracing change with an open mind. Collaboration within our extended family of doctors also provided a strong support system, allowing us to learn from each other’s experiences.
How have you introduced innovation or transformation into the business while maintaining its foundational identity?
Innovation has always been essential to our growth. While we honour the legacy of compassionate care, we have actively embraced advancements in medical technology, minimally invasive procedures, and evidence-based practices. Our younger generation, including my son, brings fresh perspectives and tech-savvy solutions, from digital health records to telemedicine. We encourage ongoing education and research, ensuring that our practice remains at the forefront of medical science, without losing sight of the human touch that defines our legacy.
In your view, how is the healthcare industry evolving, and what role do you see your generation playing in shaping its future?
Healthcare is evolving rapidly, with technology, patient empowerment, and personalized medicine reshaping the landscape. Our generation stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation. We are uniquely positioned to blend the wisdom of experience with the dynamism of new ideas. By fostering collaboration across generations and disciplines, we can drive meaningful change through improving access, quality, and outcomes for patients. Our role is to be both guardians of our legacy and champions of progress.
Looking ahead, how do you plan to expand or diversify the legacy you’ve inherited—and what message would you like to give to future generations of healthcare entrepreneurs?
Looking forward, we aim to expand our impact through interdisciplinary collaborations, community outreach, and mentoring the next wave of healthcare professionals. We hope to inspire not just our family, but the broader medical community, to prioritize ethics, empathy, and innovation. My message to future generations is simple: honour your roots, embrace change, and never lose sight of the profound privilege it is to heal. Let your work be guided by purpose, and your legacy will naturally endure.
