ASD and VSD are quite common in young children. They have an occurrence rate of 3-4 in every 1000 children. But, a large hole in the heart and improper alignment of arteries is rare. It is called DORV. This problem has an occurrence rate of only one in every 2000 children. A 7-month-old child came with this problem to KIMS Hospital in Kurnool. Doctors have performed open heart surgery on him and saved his life. This is the very first time in the Kurnool district to do open heart surgery on such a young child. Dr. Mohammed Farooq, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist explained the details thereof.

“The child’s parents are agricultural laborers from Pattikonda of Kurnool district. Their first child is a male. He was quite normal till some time. Recently he developed breathlessness. The parents took him to several doctors, who told them about his heart problem. Then, they brought the child to KIMS Hospital in Kurnool. After proper investigations, we came to know that the baby had DORV or Malaligned Conoventricular VSD). The boy had a large hole in the heart, and also malalignment of arteries that connect to the heart. So, we decided to perform an open heart surgery to treat the problem. Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon Dr. Bharat Siddharth, Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr. Valaja Joshna, and Senior Perfusionist GV Ramesh Reddy team performed the open heart surgery for 3 hours and corrected the problem.

Later, we have taken complete care of the child in the Paediatric Cardiac ICU. The baby was intubated after 6 hours of surgery. Once the child was stable he was shifted to the ward. The child was discharged after complete recovery. Now, the baby is active and has been gaining weight. The team of doctors and the parents felt happy about the recovery. We have performed this surgery for free under the Aarogyasree scheme” explained Dr. K. Mohammed Farooq.
