Many women suffer from issues such as uncontrolled bladder movement and lower abdominal pain. Unfortunately, many do not seek medical attention due to feelings of shyness and embarrassment. However, doctors warn that these problems can worsen over time if left untreated. To address this issue, a three-day summit was held at KIMS Hospital and Osmania Medical College in collaboration with KIMS Hospital and UPIA. The summit focused on modern treatment protocols in urogynecology and included participation from foreign urogynecology experts who introduced the latest technology in treatment. Doctors explain that many women avoid seeking medical attention for these problems because the majority of urologists are men. Fortunately, there is a sub-specialty called urogynecology which can treat these problems from the beginning stage itself. They added that most of these issues can be treated medically and if required, surgeries are also available. While nearly 40% of Indian women have these problems, many are still not seeking medical attention. However, the situation is improving as the number of women seeking treatment has increased from only 2-3 cases per day to nearly 20 per day. Doctors advise that women experiencing symptoms such as urination during coughing or sneezing should immediately consult a urogynecologist.
The Cadaver Session took place at Osmania Medical College, where doctors were trained in surgical procedures. The summit was attended by several gynecologists from India and other countries, and PG students were also given the opportunity to participate. For those who could not attend in person, all sessions were live telecasted.
Dr. Tamilisai Soundara Rajan, the Governor of Telangana said, “Nobody can teach a gynecologist how to face challenges. Whenever I attend conferences at KIMS, I am impressed by the level of service they provide to the nation and state, and I have great appreciation for Dr. Bhaskar Rao. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I am pleased to see that KIMS is doing a fantastic job of raising awareness about this issue, especially in rural areas.
The prevalence of the rare specialty is more evident among elderly women. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Anuradha Koduri, Head of the Department of Urogynecology at KIMS, whose expertise is invaluable in this field. It is crucial to have a knowledgeable urogynecologist in this hospital. When I discussed with Dr. Koduri about establishing the department in the Government Hospital, she assured me of her willingness to initiate it. Her enthusiasm and dedication are evident in this conference hall. I am delighted to see Dr. Neena Desai, who has extensive experience in Gynecology. I wish all the Postgraduates in this new specialization all the best.
It is essential to acknowledge the difference in the level of understanding between urban and rural people. Therefore, we need to focus on educating rural people more to ensure they are aware of the problems and challenges that they may face. Dr. Bhaskar Rao has taken a commendable initiative by arranging mobile units to provide healthcare services to the rural population. Such summits are a great way to learn about the procedures and techniques that can help us provide quality life to the patients.”
The summit held at KIMS Hospital was attended by CMD Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao, summit chairpersons Dr. Balamba and Dr. Neena Desai, and organizing secretary Dr. Anuradha Koduri. International urogynecology experts, including Prof. Peter L. Rosenblatt, Dr. Holly Elizabeth Richter, Dr. Marlene Corton, Dr. Michael D Moen, and Dr. Roger P. Goldberg, were also present at the event and explained the latest techniques in this field. Additionally, several Indian doctors, including Dr. J.B. Sharma, Dr. Sanjay Pandey, Dr. Suyash Naval, Dr. Sitamahalakshmi, Dr. Srikala Prasad, Dr. Amita Jain, Dr. Tamilselvi, Dr. Meera Raghavan, Dr. Rajesh Taneja, and Dr. Mangesh Narwadkar, provided valuable suggestions. The program was organized by Dr. Nirmala Papalkar, Dr. Bindupriya, Dr. Anuradha Panda, and Dr. Aparajita D’souza.
