In a significant step toward advancing medical research and innovation, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, has inaugurated a dedicated Clinical Trial Unit (CTU) to facilitate high-quality clinical research, drug development, and evidence-based healthcare in the North-Eastern region of India.

The newly inaugurated unit is designed to streamline and strengthen clinical trial processes, ensuring adherence to global standards of safety, ethics, and regulatory compliance. It will serve as a hub for multicentric studies, public health research, and industry-sponsored trials, offering new opportunities for collaboration between academia, healthcare institutions, and the pharmaceutical sector.

Speaking at the inauguration, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, said, “The launch of the Clinical Trial Unit marks a milestone for research and innovation in Northeast India. It will empower clinicians and researchers to conduct high-impact studies and contribute to the development of novel therapies and medical devices.”

The CTU is equipped with advanced data management systems, trained research staff, and dedicated spaces for patient monitoring and documentation. It aims to enhance India’s participation in global research while addressing regional health challenges such as infectious diseases, lifestyle disorders, and emerging health threats.

Officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) have lauded the initiative, emphasizing that such institutional research units will play a vital role in strengthening India’s clinical research ecosystem and promoting the country as a global hub for ethical, high-quality trials.

The AIIMS Guwahati Clinical Trial Unit is also expected to foster capacity building by training young researchers, clinicians, and medical students in the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ensuring that future medical studies are conducted with the highest ethical and scientific standards.

With this launch, AIIMS Guwahati takes a major stride toward bridging the research gap in the northeastern region — reinforcing India’s commitment to innovation-driven healthcare and equitable access to medical advancements.
