The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, today inaugurated its state-of-the-art Renal Transplant Unit, a major step toward reducing the need for critically ill kidney patients to seek care in distant metropolitan centres.
The renal transplant facility was officially opened on 19 September 2025 under the leadership of Padma Shri Dr. Budhendra Kumar Jain, the newly appointed President of AIIMS Raipur.
It is designed to provide comprehensive kidney care including diagnosis, surgery, post-operative care, and long-term follow-up, allowing patients to stay closer to home and reducing delays, expense, and physical burden associated with travel.
The facility is supported by a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, urologists, transplant surgeons, specialised nursing staff, advanced diagnostics and post-operative care support units.
Implications for Patient Care and Critical Care Referrals
With local availability of renal transplants, many patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), previously referred to metro hospitals for critical surgery, can now be treated at AIIMS-Raipur. This is expected to lower the volume of referrals for critical kidney care outside the region.
Economically weaker patients, who often face financial and logistical challenges, stand to benefit significantly from this development. Reduced travel, lower associated costs, and quicker access to treatment are anticipated outcomes.
“This facility will help us bring world-class kidney care to Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states. Patients can now access critical transplant services close to home, which means faster treatment and less burden.”
Dr. Budhendra Kumar Jain, President, AIIMS-Raipur
“We are committed to ensuring our renal-transplant programme is not just about surgical intervention, but about holistic patient care — from diagnostics to recovery and long-term follow up — so that complications are fewer and critical care referrals are minimised.”
Alongside the Renal Transplant Unit, AIIMS-Raipur also inaugurated new specialized OPDs in Ophthalmology and Nephrology, Paediatric Surgery and Ophthalmology wards, and a Cone Beam CT unit in Dentistry during the same period. These additions are part of a broader expansion aimed at making advanced healthcare accessible locally.
