The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) recently conducted a successful dual surgery on a premature baby born at 32 weeks, weighing just 2kg a baby of a businessman hailing from Hyderabad. The infant had a relatively rare condition called posterior urethral valves (PUV), which is a condition found in baby boys where extra tissue blocks or narrows the flow of urine from the bladder through the urethra and can cause urine to build up and damage the kidneys. This blockage can make it hard for the baby to pee normally while in the mother’s womb thereby leading to less amniotic fluid around the baby, leading to premature delivery, the way it has happened to our baby, PUV is usually present from birth and can be detected during pregnancy or shortly after. Treatment often involves surgery to remove the blockage and help the baby urinate normally. Close follow-up to assess the kidney damage and treat it accordingly as the child grows

Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran, Consultant Paediatric Urologist, AINU led the medical team in deciding to perform both circumcision and valve fulguration surgery in a single session. This approach aimed to minimize the infant’s exposure to anaesthesia and reduce surgical risks.

Operating on such a small and delicate patient posed significant challenges, including precise anaesthesia management, strict infection control, and the use of specially designed instruments. The medical team carefully planned and executed the procedures. The surgery started with a circumcision, followed by valve fulguration, where endoscopic techniques were used to remove the obstructive valves in the urethra. This allowed the baby to urinate normally, preventing potential kidney damage.

The two-hour operation was successful. The infant was then moved to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for close monitoring, where medical staff kept a close watch on the baby’s condition, ensuring proper care and recovery.

Dr. Prabhu expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “This successful surgery highlights AINU’s dedication to providing advanced medical care, even for our youngest patients. This showcases the hospital’s expertise in Pediatric urology care, providing vital support and treatment for the most vulnerable patients.” Dr. Nityanand led the anaesthesia team, and other teams like Paediatrics, NICU, and Paediatric nephrology supported the faster recovery of the child.

The infant’s parents expressed their heartfelt gratitude, saying, “We were so scared when we learned about our baby’s condition.
