Embrace Eco-Friendly Practices This National Energy Conservation Day
As India marks National Energy Conservation Day today, HOSMAC, a leading hospital design & management consultancy, proudly leads the charge of advocating eco-friendly practices within the healthcare sector.
As per the XDI Global Hospital Infrastructure Physical Climate Risk Report released at COP-28 held in Dubai, climate change could force 10% of hospitals across India to relocate or shut down by 2100. Hospitals are energy guzzlers as they operate 24X7, 365 days leading to heavy greenhouse gas emissions, thereby negatively impacting the environment. This staggering energy consumption, estimated at approximately INR 20-22 crores annually for larger healthcare institutions, emphasizes the pressing need for sustainable solutions among hospitals.
HOSMAC is actively committed to incorporating green design and management solutions, aiming to significantly reduce the carbon footprints of hospitals. The consultancy prioritizes attaining a minimum silver rating for eco-friendliness in all collaborated hospitals. Furthermore, it also emphasizes the creation of well-ventilated and naturally well-lit hospital environments, leading to reduced energy consumption from air conditioning and lighting systems.
Dr. Vivek Desai, Founder and Managing Director of HOSMAC, expressed “HOSMAC has been instrumental in advancing green initiatives through its projects, firmly advocating for sustainable healthcare infrastructure. However, green hospitals still seem to be a futuristic hope for India. The disparity lies in government mandates; while public hospitals require a GRIHA 3 rating, this isn’t mandatory for private hospitals. To incentivize green technologies in private healthcare, offering reduced electricity or property tax bills could foster a shift towards eco-friendly solutions.”
HOSMAC’s dedication to making sustainable hospital infrastructure the norm is evident in its projects, such as the Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital, which is a charitable hospital located in Dharampur, Gujarat. The hospital provides for natural ventilation, reducing the usage of air conditioners, and it also has sensory gardens that not only adds more greenery to the space but also helps patients heal better and quicker. Other projects that have adopted sustainable design solutions include Hiranandani and Kohinoor Hospitals in Mumbai, Alexis Hospital in Nagpur, and upcoming projects, such as Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Shri Ramchandra Institute of Medical Sciences in Aurangabad, Yadupati Singhania Super Specialty Hospital in Kanpur, and more.
In alignment with its sustainability commitment, HOSMAC successfully hosted the 4th Edition of the Hospital Engineering Summit (HES) earlier this year, under the theme ‘Sustainable Hospital Design’. It delved into the challenges, solutions, and global best practices in crafting enduringly sustainable healthcare environments which saw key industry leaders including Hospitals CXOs, engineers, designers, medical equipment vendors, and students of architecture & healthcare management.
As HOSMAC continues to spearhead eco-conscious practices, National Energy Conservation Day serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to forge a sustainable future for healthcare.
