A major boost to strengthen state health infrastructure, improve service delivery, and enhance public health outcomes

In a decisive step toward enhancing public healthcare systems, the Government of India has approved the release of supplementary financial assistance to the state of Punjab under the National Health Mission (NHM). The allocation aims to reinforce Punjab’s efforts in improving healthcare access, infrastructure, and services across both rural and urban regions.

The supplementary funds, approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, come at a crucial time when the state is intensifying its focus on strengthening healthcare delivery through decentralized and community-based approaches. This additional funding will support critical verticals under both the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM).

Purpose and Utilization of Funds

The sanctioned funds will be directed toward key health priorities identified by the state, including but not limited to:

  • Augmentation of maternal and child healthcare services, including antenatal and postnatal care, immunization, and institutional deliveries.
  • Upgradation of primary and secondary health infrastructure, with a focus on sub-centres, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and Community Health Centres (CHCs).
  • Strengthening of emergency and referral transport services to ensure timely access to critical care, especially in remote and underserved areas.
  • Implementation of digital health technologies and e-governance tools in line with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
  • Capacity building and training of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and frontline health workers.
  • Intensification of disease surveillance and control programs such as Tuberculosis (TB), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), and vector-borne diseases.

Centre-State Synergy and Vision Alignment

This move is part of the Centre’s ongoing commitment to support the states through collaborative federalism and ensure alignment with the goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Punjab’s consistent efforts in improving healthcare outcomes and efficient utilization of previous NHM grants were key considerations in the approval process.

A senior official from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated:

“The Government of India remains steadfast in its mission to build a robust and equitable health system across all states. Punjab has demonstrated commendable progress in several health indicators, and this supplementary allocation is intended to support the state in further accelerating its initiatives under NHM.”

State Government’s Response

Punjab’s Health and Family Welfare Minister [Insert Name] expressed gratitude to the Central Government for its continued support and assured optimal use of the funds:

“We welcome this timely support from the Government of India. This will enable us to fast-track priority health interventions, reduce service delivery gaps, and reach vulnerable populations more effectively. The funds will be utilized transparently and in alignment with the state’s health roadmap.”

The Punjab Health Department is expected to issue detailed implementation guidelines and fund distribution frameworks shortly to ensure timely execution of planned activities.
