In a significant medical achievement, Dr. Samir Kale, Consultant
NeuroSurgeon, at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai successfully removed a large Sphenoid
Wing Meningioma, weighing approximately 700 grams, from a 64-year-old male patient, Mr. Ganesh
Yadav (name changed), a resident of Kharghar. The complex surgery, performed after a thorough
diagnostic process, not only saved the patient’s life, but also led to the resolution of long-standing
behavioral and neurological symptoms that had been troubling him for over a decade.

Mr. Yadav, for over 10 years, had been silently battling symptoms that were gradually affecting his
everyday life — frequent headaches, slurred speech, facial drooping, mood and behavioral changes,
and loss of bladder & bowel control. Simple daily tasks began to feel increasingly difficult, impacting
his independence and interactions with family members. As these symptoms were initially managed
as a psychiatric condition, the actual cause remained undiagnosed for several years.

However, upon detailed evaluation at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai in November 2025,
an MRI scan revealed the presence of a large abnormal growth in the right front part of the brain. This
growth was causing significant pressure on surrounding brain structures, and had shifted the brain
from its normal position by 8.3mm. The condition was diagnosed as a Sphenoid Wing Meningioma —
a type of brain tumor that required urgent surgical removal.

On November 19, 2025, Dr. Kale performed a bifrontal craniotomy and successfully removed the
entire tumor which weighed approximately 700 grams. Despite the tumor’s size and complex location,
the surgery was completed successfully without any complications. Importantly after the procedure,
the patient did not experience any weakness or loss of movement in the hands or legs, which was a
major concern due to the tumor’s size and location.

Following the surgery, the patient was shifted to the ICU for close monitoring. Within 24 hours of the
surgery, the patient was successfully taken off ventilator support and showed encouraging signs of
recovery. His health parameters, including blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels, were stable.
He was fully conscious, aware of his surroundings, and able to respond to instructions, indicating no
neurological complications following the surgery.

The most significant outcome of this surgery was the complete cessation of the patient’s behavioral
symptoms, which had been a major part of his long-term struggle. Following the surgery, all behavioral
changes resolved completely, and the patient is now able to carry out daily activities with greater ease
and independence. His overall interaction with family members has also improved significantly,
contributing to a better quality of life.

Sharing their experience, the patient’s son said, “The doctors and staff at Fortis Hiranandani were
extremely helpful throughout the process. We were initially not confident about proceeding with such
a major surgery, but Dr. Kale took the time to patiently explain the condition and need for surgery

which gave us the confidence to take the right decision. His constant guidance made a challenging
time much easier for us, and we are truly thankful to see my father return to normal daily life.”
On November 24, 2025, the patient was discharged, with no weakness in his arms or legs. As part of
his recovery, he was advised physiotherapy and gradual movement to regain strength. At the time of
discharge, his blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels were normal and stable.

Dr. Samir Kale, Consultant NeuroSurgeon at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai expressed
satisfaction with the outcome, saying, “The successful removal of this large meningioma, weighing 700
grams, demonstrates the precision and skill of our surgical team. This case highlights the importance
of early diagnosis, especially in cases where the tumor presents with psychiatric symptoms. The
resolution of the patient’s behavioral symptoms post-surgery is a rare and remarkable outcome that
underscores the potential for recovery with timely and effective intervention.”

This case emphasizes the need for prompt action in complex neurological cases. Fortis Hiranandani
Hospital, Navi Mumbai continues to provide the highest level of care, ensuring that patients benefit
from the latest surgical techniques and patient-first medical care.
