In a first-of-its-kind breakthrough for the region, HCG Cancer Hospital Vijayawada successfully treated Ms. Sujatha (Name changed), a 54-year-old woman diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer 2-3 months ago and was cured using a cutting-edge radiation therapy protocol completed in just five days. This advanced treatment, combining Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI) with Respiratory Gating, significantly reduced the number of sessions compared to conventional radiation therapy, which typically requires 25 to 30 sessions. The procedure not only ensured clinical precision and safety but also minimized the physical, emotional, and financial burden on the patient.
She was further evaluated under the guidance of Dr. K. P. Ranganath, Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology, HCG Cancer Center, Vijayawada. Her physical condition was good at the time of consultation. After a thorough evaluation, she was counselled on all possible treatment options, and a personalized treatment plan was developed accordingly. Dr. Ranganath and dedicated multidisciplinary team, comprising Dr. Gopichand (Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology) and Dr. Priyadharshini (Medical Oncologist), of HCG Cancer Center, Vijayawada, ensured Ms. Sujatha was treated with clinical precision and continuity of care at every stage.
Dr. K P Ranganath, Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology, HCG Cancer Center, Vijayawada, said, “Breast cancer is often common in the age group of 35-60 years old. PBI has been an established option for select early-stage breast cancer cases. In this instance, we treated a 54-year-old woman who was anxious about prolonged radiation schedules and had sought multiple opinions before coming to us. Based on her diagnosis and clinical suitability, we adopted a highly advanced protocol that combined Partial Breast Irradiation with Respiratory Gating, the most precise form of image-guided therapy. Cancer therapy evolves constantly, and most therapies decrease the physical strain and require fewer hospital visits. Therefore, this therapy will equally reduce the number of hospital visits, will have equivalent responses, and is internationally accepted. ”
“This approach allowed us to deliver targeted, high-dose radiation to the affected area while sparing healthy tissues, and complete the entire treatment in just five sessions over five days. The patient tolerated the procedure extremely well, with no major side effects, and was able to return home after each session. This case not only reflects the strength of our multidisciplinary planning but also highlights our commitment to delivering cutting-edge cancer care locally, with accuracy, compassion, and reduced treatment burden for the patient”, shared Dr. Ranganath.
Mr Yuva Kishore Terli, Chief Operating Officer, HCG Curie City Cancer Centre, Vijayawada, said, “Our goal is to make advanced, world-class cancer care accessible in cities like Vijayawada. By reducing the number of hospital visits, this precision protocol lowers the emotional, physical, and financial burden on patients. It’s proof that tier-2 cities can deliver outcomes at par with any metro centre. The case demonstrates the power of early detection and the value of personalized treatment. Through daily 3D imaging, respiratory coordination, and a focused radiation approach, the therapy was completed with no major side effects.”
“When I was diagnosed, I feared long treatments and painful recovery said Sujatha (Patient Name Changed), the patient. “But the doctors explained everything clearly. I was able to go home every day, and in just five days, I was done. It gave me so much hope and confidence”.
HCG’s commitment to bringing state-of-the-art Oncology care closer to patients is reflected in every step of this treatment, right from the use of evidence-based protocols to empathetic patient communication and advanced technological integration.
With HCG Vijayawada leading the charge, early-stage breast cancer patients across Andhra Pradesh now have access to treatment that is faster, safer, and closer to home, redefining cancer care for tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India.
