Accelerating Sustainable Healthcare: A 30% Incentive for Electric Ambulance Production
In a decisive move to revolutionize emergency medical services and promote sustainable transportation, the Indian government has announced a substantial subsidy of up to 30% on the production costs of electric ambulances. This initiative, under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, underscores the nation’s commitment to integrating eco-friendly solutions within its healthcare infrastructure.
Strategic Investment in Green Mobility
The PM E-DRIVE scheme, launched on October 1, 2024, with a robust budget of ₹10,900 crore over two years, allocates ₹500 crore specifically for the deployment of electric ambulances. This strategic investment aims to invigorate local manufacturing and expedite the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in critical public services.

Guidelines and Collaborative Framework
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Road Transport, is formulating comprehensive guidelines to define eligibility criteria and establish performance and safety standards for electric ambulances. These guidelines will be finalized in consultation with the National Health Mission (NHM), ensuring alignment with national healthcare objectives. Subsidies will be directly linked to the battery capacity of the vehicles, incentivizing the development of high-performance e-ambulances.

Diverse Ambulance Fleet Enhancement
India’s current ambulance fleet encompasses a variety of vehicles, including two-wheelers, patient transport vehicles, and both basic and advanced life support variants. The subsidy scheme will focus on patient transport, basic, and advanced life support vehicles, facilitating a transition to a more modern and environmentally friendly fleet. With approximately 86,000 ambulances registered nationwide and an annual procurement of about 25,000 under the NHM, this initiative is poised to significantly impact the emergency medical services landscape.

Global Perspectives and Future Outlook
Drawing inspiration from international precedents in countries like the United States, Canada, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan, which have successfully deployed electric ambulances, the MHI envisions the development of hybrid engine-powered ambulances for patient transport and fully electric vehicles for larger life support ambulances. These e-ambulances, known for ranges between 150 to 320 kilometers on a full charge, exemplify the potential benefits of adopting electric ambulances in India.
