Doctors Raise Awareness at KIMS Hospital on World Physiotherapy Day

Nearly 1 in 13 people in India suffer from back pain, with about 90% experiencing it without any significant underlying cause. However, this issue can be effectively managed with simple solutions. Doctors from the Neuro Rehabilitation department of KIMS Hospital, Dr. Ajay Kumar Midde and Dr. Siddharth Ghantayat, emphasized that proper muscle strength can provide relief from even severe back pain. They shared this information during an awareness program organized on World Physiotherapy Day, aimed at educating the general public about the importance of muscle strength in managing back pain.

“Like every year, this year’s theme for World Physiotherapy Day is ‘Back Pain.’ Back pain can be entirely preventable if we understand the strength and capacity of our muscles. At KIMS Hospital, we offer easy and accessible tests to assess muscle strength, especially focusing on the muscles of the back, abdomen, and trunk. These are simple and affordable tests, and we conducted them for nearly 100 volunteers to evaluate their muscle strength. Based on the results, physiotherapy treatments were provided, which helped alleviate their back pain completely. These tests can be repeated every three to six months based on necessity. Different tests are conducted for people in different age groups – one set for those aged 10 to 50 and another for those above 50,” explained Dr. Ajay Kumar Midde.

Sitting for Long Hours: A Growing Concern

Many professionals, including software engineers, bankers, and other desk workers, who sit for long hours (8 to 10 hours a day) without movement, are increasingly suffering from back pain. Earlier, this issue was more common in those aged 50 to 60, but now, individuals as young as 25 are facing this problem. Even activities like lifting heavy items, such as rice sacks or water cans, can lead to sudden back pain. However, if muscles are strong enough, such issues can be avoided.

Additionally, the way people sit, especially during long-distance travel, plays a significant role in preventing back pain. Correct posture helps distribute the weight more evenly, reducing strain on the lower back. Poor road conditions and bumpy rides also contribute to the issue. Dr. Ajay Kumar Midde and Dr. Siddharth Ghantayat concluded that muscle strength and capacity are the key to addressing these problems. Regular evaluation and appropriate treatment can lead to a pain-free, healthier life.
