This Independence Day, Gleneagles Hospital Mumbai has taken a powerful step towards building a healthier nation by launching the ‘Freedom from Fat – Comprehensive Obesity Clinic’ under the inspiring campaign “Iss Baar Azadi Motape Se”. Inaugurated on India’s 78th Independence Day, the initiative aims to help individuals gain true freedom, that is, freedom from the health, social, and emotional burden of obesity. The clinic brings together endocrinologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, dietitians, and psychologists, offering complete medical, nutritional, and emotional care. This multi-disciplinary approach ensures every cause of obesity is addressed under one roof for lasting results. The team comprises of Dr Shankar Zanwar – Sr consultant gastroenterologist, Dr Chetan Kalal – Associate Director Hepatologist, Dr Sneha Kothari – Sr consultant endocrinologist, Dr Aarti Ullal – Consultant Diabetologist, Dr Prashanth Rao – Director of Gastrointestinal & Minimal Access surgery, Ms. Kavita Adimoolam – Psychologist and Ms Zamurrud Patel – Sr Dietician.
Obesity cases are rising at an alarming rate in India. According to a recent Lancet study, nearly 450 million (45 crore) Indians could be overweight or obese by 2050. This would mean India will have the second-highest number of overweight and obese people in the world by mid-century after China.
“Modern sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits that are constantly ordering restaurant food, eating junk, processed foods, hormonal imbalances, and stress have fuelled this silent epidemic. Obesity is not just a cosmetic concern. The psychological toll, including low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, and depression, makes it an even more urgent public health priority. “Obesity is prevalent in people of all age groups. Currently, 8 out of 10 people visiting us in the OPD are obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above. These people come with complaints of tiredness, sleep apnoea, and muscle and joint pain. So, approximately 80% of people are battling obesity. And among 80% of people, 50% are at a greater risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, or even cancer in later life. Hence, timely obesity management is key for successful patient outcomes. This unique clinic is designed as a complete, patient-centric program, ensuring that every individual gets tailored advice to shed those excess kilos and lead a healthy life,” explains doctors.
This Independence Day, we are not only celebrating the freedom of our nation but also championing the freedom of our people from chronic health burdens like obesity. The clinic offers personalized, holistic solutions by bringing together specialists from diverse fields:
- Endocrinologistsfor managing hormonal and metabolic factors
- Hepatologistsfor treating fatty liver and related disorders
- Gastroenterologistsfor digestion-related obesity concerns
- Dietitiansfor tailor-made nutritional planning
- Psychologistsfor behavioural and emotional support
