B/O Nargis…. Was diagnosed to have a heart condition called d-transposition of great arteries(TGA) wherein, the deoxygenated blood gets circulated to all the organs. Parents were very worried and anxious after the anomaly scan and they came to Jupiter Hospital for further opinion. They were counseled in detailed regarding this condition and a plan of care formulated for this baby.

As the family could not afford the financial cost, support was sought from Jupiter Foundation, Rotary club – Pristine, Pune and Mukul Madhav Foundation. Baby got delivered in another hospital and arrangement had been done to shift the baby to Jupiter NICU. Dr. Rahul Saraf, Consultant – Paediatric Cardiologist did a 2D echo study to confirm the findings. “ d-TGA is seen in one in 3500 – 5000 live births. This baby needs surgery within first two – three weeks of life. The child needs to be cared for in a dedicated set up which can provide the emergency surgery, when needed.” Said Dr. Rahul Saraf

This child was stabilized at the state of the art NICU at Jupiter and underwent an open heart surgery on day 5 of life. “This child underwent an Arterial Switch Operation, which is a complex open heart surgery performed on a tiny walnut sized heart of a baby. The improperly connected great vessels are disconnected and attached to the proper chambers of the heart. In addition, the tiny coronary arteries also need to be repositioned to the correct vessel. Post operative course was stormy, but with the enormous efforts of the paediatric ICU staff, the baby got a new lease of life.

Coincidentally, on the same day the paediatric cardiac ICU received another 3 days old baby on ventilator support. This baby had obstructed Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection(TAPVC). This baby was very sick and taken for the surgery within couple of hours at mid night. Dr. Abhijeet Naik and his surgical team operated through the night to salvage this baby. This baby also made a remarkable recovery and both these tiny babies were discharged after 2 weeks on the same day to the delight of their parents.
