Kerala has witnessed a substantial increase in communicable diseases over the last ten years, with the state reporting 12 additional diseases in the period, raising the total number of reported communicable ailments to 25. This surge poses serious public health challenges and underscores the urgent need for enhanced hygiene practices and climate adaptation measures.

Public health experts attribute the rise to poor sanitary conditions, contamination of water sources, inadequate hand hygiene, and increased human-animal contact, which contribute to the spread of both water-borne and zoonotic diseases. The effects of climate change, including altered rainfall patterns and rising temperatures, have further exacerbated the situation by influencing the lifecycle of disease vectors and parasites.

Ernakulam district alone reported a 129% increase in deaths from communicable diseases within three years, with diseases such as dengue, leptospirosis, and diarrheal infections accounting for most cases. These alarming statistics highlight the pressing need for stronger disease surveillance, community awareness, and improved infrastructure for water and sanitation.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of immediate intervention through sustained public education, promotion of safe drinking water practices, enhanced waste management, and efficient vector control measures to curb the spread of infectious diseases across the state.

“Addressing Kerala’s communicable disease overload requires coordinated efforts between government agencies, healthcare providers, and communities. Strengthening hygiene, early detection, and climate-responsive health strategies are critical to safeguarding public health,” said a senior health official.
