Thiruvananthapuram, September 28, 2025: Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda has reassured Kerala that the demand for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state is under serious consideration by the Union Government.
Addressing the BJP State Executive meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, September 27, Nadda acknowledged Kerala’s aspirations and stressed the Centre’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure nationwide.
“The demand for an AIIMS in Kerala is recognised, and at the appropriate time it will be announced and it will be set up at the appropriate place,” Nadda said, adding that such initiatives align with the government’s larger vision to improve medical education and healthcare access across India.
For several years, the Kerala government has been pressing for an AIIMS, citing the need for advanced research facilities and improved tertiary healthcare. Kerala Health Minister Veena George once again urged the Centre to expedite the decision. “The people of Kerala have long awaited an AIIMS, and we hope the Union government will prioritise this request,” she said.
The state has already identified potential sites, including land at Kinalur in Kozhikode. However, the final decision rests with the Union Government after a detailed feasibility and criteria-based assessment.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi has publicly expressed his preference for Alappuzha as the location, citing the district’s weak healthcare infrastructure. He added that, in the event of hurdles, Thrissur—his parliamentary constituency—could be considered. His remarks have stirred debate within the state BJP, with party leaders clarifying that the official stance is to leave the final decision to the Union Government.
As discussions continue, JP Nadda’s assurance has renewed hope that Kerala’s long-pending demand for an AIIMS may soon move closer to reality.
