Open Surgeries – One of the Main Causes of Hernia: Doctors
International conference on Essentials of Hernia Repairs at Hyderabad
Hernia is an unseen and underappreciated adverse impact on society. Hernia Repairs have come a long way in the last century. Specially, last decade had been a particularly exciting one as it ranged from Tissue repair to Mesh repair to newer and latest meshes. Also, some of us are now also talking ‘no mesh’ repairs. In our country, most hernia repairs happen in conventional, open technique method. The time to recovery and to get back to work is significantly longer than that of minimally invasive approach.
Majority of hernias repaired open fashion have very high potential to recur and will become a more complex issue. To discuss all the developments and trends taking place in the field of Hernia repairs, an international conference on Hernia Repairs was held at Hyderabad in association with AWR (Abdominal Wall Reconstruction) surgeons’ community on 24th and 25th of November. More than 400 delegates from across India and abroad have participated in the conference to listen to experts and changing trends in Hernia repair surgeries.
This conference was most robust source of education in all thing’s hernia, be it subcutaneous endoscopic abdominal wall closure or robotic parastomal surgery repair. This conference Marked the origin of the ‘AWR’ (Abdominal wall Reconstruction) Concept into south India nine collaboration with AWR Surgeons Community and IHC (International Hernia Collaboration). This conference saw many eminent surgeons of the field like, President of IHC, Dr. Brian Jacob from New Jersey along with many surgeons from USA, Russia and our national leaders in hernia repairs like Dr. B. Ramana, Dr.Punjani, Dr. Nandakishore Dukkipati and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dr Nandakishore Dukkipati, spokesperson of the conference said, “Several hundreds of hernia surgeries happen every week at Hyderabad. Most repairs happen in conventional, open technique. We have organized this conference to train both the interns as well as specialists about latest treatment techniques in the field. For this conference, National & international Experts of Hernia Repair in the field of Abdominal wall who have rich knowledge & experience in the field of hernia came down to share their theoretical as well as practical understanding of the subject with the participants of the conference.”
“Several hundreds of hernia surgeries happen every week at Hyderabad. Most repairs happen in conventional, open technique. The time to recovery and to get back to work is significantly longer than that of minimally invasive approach. Statistically, more hernias are seen among women and one of the relatively common areas in women are cesarean section and family planning surgery areas on the abdomen.” He added.
“Many know that hernias develop with time and age, but very few understand that there is a chance of developing hernia because of open surgery. In India, Lakhs of such open surgeries are being performed annually in India for various reasons like C-section, surgery for cancer, liver surgery, etc. The common treatment for hernia is a surgery. But, gone are the days of open and basic laparoscopic repair of hernias. The technique in hernia surgery is called ‘Endoscopic Sandwich Hernia Repair’. This procedure can be performed in a minimally invasive manner or with a robot. Robotic hernia repair gives far more visual clarity on anatomy and help in more precise surgical process. Better knowledge regarding hernias, better surgical principles, understanding the latest methodology and implementing the same are the need of the hour in the world of hernias,” Dr Nandakishore said.
Hyderabad based Livlife hospitals, headed by Dr. Nandakishore Dukkipati is a tertiary referral center for such complex and recurrent hernia repairs with these latest techniques and robotics.
