Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi called upon the Indian pharmaceutical industry to intensify its focus on research and development (R&D) and aggressively pursue global patents, charting a decisive course for India’s evolving healthcare and life sciences sector.
Speaking at the National Pharma Innovation Summit, PM Modi highlighted the immense potential of India’s pharma sector, and stressed that building innovation-led excellence is essential for the country to claim its place among the world’s most influential pharma nations.
“Our scientists and entrepreneurs have already made India the pharmacy of the world. It is now time to raise the bar—invest more in R&D, develop breakthrough molecules, and capture more global patents. Innovation is the passport for India’s next leap,” Prime Minister Modi declared.
Accelerating Innovation for Global Leadership
PM Modi challenged pharma companies to go beyond generics and focus on novel drug discoveries, biosimilars, and advanced therapies. “We must nurture a culture of curiosity and risk-taking in our scientific institutions and companies. Every patent granted to an Indian innovator is a step toward global leadership and self-reliance,” he said.
Building a Robust Intellectual Property Ecosystem
The Prime Minister announced enhanced government support for patent filings, R&D grants, and collaborations between academia and industry. He urged regulatory bodies to continue simplifying patent approval processes and called for stronger partnerships with international research organizations.
“Intellectual Property is not just a legal shield—it is economic power, recognition, and respect in the global marketplace,” PM Modi emphasized.
Creating India’s Pharma Innovation Roadmap
He outlined a roadmap to boost investments in basic and applied research, promote world-class innovation clusters, and incentivize start-ups working on frontier medical technologies. PM Modi urged the youth entering pharmaceutical sciences to embrace entrepreneurship and make India the birthplace of next-generation blockbusters.
A Call to Action
“Let us adopt a research-first mindset and aim for excellence that makes the world take notice. The future of medicine will be written by those who innovate and protect their ideas. I urge every stakeholder to make India the home of pharma innovation and patents,” the Prime Minister concluded.
