Sree Avittom Thirunal (SAT) Hospital, a state-owned institution in Thiruvananthapuram, has emerged as a leader in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) success within the government sector. The hospital has facilitated the birth of over 500 children through advanced IVF methods, achieving a success rate comparable to global standards.

Pioneering IVF Services in South India

Established in 2012, the Reproductive Medicine Department at SAT Hospital marked a significant milestone by initiating the first IVF program in a government hospital in South India. This achievement positioned SAT Hospital as the fifth government hospital in the country to offer successful IVF treatments.

Advanced Facilities and Comprehensive Care

The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including:

IVF and Andrology Laboratories: Advanced labs for comprehensive fertility assessments and treatments.

Cryopreservation Systems: Facilities for storing eggs, sperm, and embryos, providing options for cancer patients and others requiring fertility preservation.

Specialized Theatres: Dedicated IVF and laparoscopy theatres to support various assisted reproductive technologies.

These facilities enable SAT Hospital to offer a range of services, such as hormone treatments, surgeries, and assisted reproductive technologies like IVF and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). Government’s Commitment to Accessible Infertility Treatment

State Health Minister Veena George emphasized the government’s dedication to making infertility treatments accessible and affordable. Recognizing the high costs associated with private sector treatments, the government has invested in modernizing infertility clinics across the state. This includes operational Reproductive Medicine departments at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and units at Kottayam and Kozhikode Medical Colleges. Major maternal and child hospitals under the health department also run infertility clinics.

Training and Development in Reproductive Medicine

To address the growing need for specialized professionals in reproductive medicine, courses are being conducted at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. This initiative aims to cultivate expertise in the field, ensuring high-quality care for patients. The Health Minister commended the SAT Hospital’s Reproductive Medicine Department for setting a successful example in the government sector.
