A 6-year-old girl suffered from a continuous cough for eight months, visiting nearly ten doctors without improvement. A team led by Dr Mounnish Balaji at Ankura Hospital uncovered an unexpected trigger, which was strong perfume, and brought the child back to health

Ankura Hospital once again demonstrated the power of attentive, compassionate, and detailed care when a 6-year-old child suffering from a persistent cough for eight months finally found relief. Guided by Dr Mounnish Balaji, the team solved a medical mystery that had left multiple doctors puzzled. The case highlights how everyday external irritants like perfumes can silently harm children and why early recognition and lifestyle adjustments are essential to protecting young lungs.

A distressed mother Mrs. Ashwini patil (name changed), arrived at Ankura Hospital with her 6-year-old daughter, Aarya Patil (name changed), exhausted and frustrated after months of unanswered questions. The child had been coughing continuously for eight long months. The family had already met nearly ten doctors, yet the little girl showed no signs of recovery. During the initial assessment, the team noted that the child’s chest sounded normal. Even the chest X-ray showed no abnormality, leaving the cause unclear. She was given medication and asked to return after a month.
But when the mother returned, she was angry and worried. “There is no improvement,” she said urgently. While she spoke, something unexpected happened: the nurse standing beside the doctor suddenly began coughing intensely.

Concerned, Dr. Mounnish asked the nurse what was happening. Her response changed everything. “Sir, the mother’s perfume is very strong. It is triggering my cough,” she said. In that moment, the team realised what months of tests and consultations could not reveal. The strong perfume the mother used daily was likely the same trigger affecting her child. The team gently explained this to the mother and advised her to stop wearing that perfume around the child. Fifteen days later, the same mother walked into the OPD with a smile instead of stress. Her child’s cough had almost completely disappeared. A simple change had solved the problem that medicines and multiple consultations could not.

Dr Mounnish Balaji, Consultant Pediatric Pulmonologist, Allergy & Sleep Specialist, Ankura Hospital for Women and Child , Pune said, “A fragrance that was harmless to the mother and me was toxic to both the nurse and the child. This shows how differently every individual reacts to external irritants. Parents must remember that strong perfumes, room fresheners, incense sticks, and aerosol sprays can be powerful cough triggers for some children. In this case, stopping one perfume succeeded where medicines failed. It is a strong reminder that sometimes the answer lies not in investigations, but in our surroundings.”

Dr Balaji warned parents that strong fragrances can irritate the airways and cause a persistent cough. Not treating her at the right time could have led to complications like repeated cough episodes, absenteeism in school further impact the academic performance. Not all children react the same way; sensitivity varies widely. Perfumes, deodorants, air fresheners, mosquito sprays, incense sticks, and scented detergents can all trigger coughing. If a child has a prolonged cough with no medical cause, parents must examine environmental triggers.

“We had lost all hope after months of running from one doctor to another. Watching our child cough day and night broke us completely. But Dr Mounnish Balaji listened to me with patience and found what no one else could. Just one simple change brought my daughter back to health, and I will always be grateful to him and the Ankura Hospital team for helping my daughter get rid of that notorious cough, “ said Mrs. Ashwini patil (name changed), Mother of the child.

Sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest healing. By listening carefully, observing closely, and considering even the unexpected reasons, the team led by Dr Mounnish Balaji helped a little girl breathe freely again. Ankura Hospital continues to guide families with compassionate care and awareness, ensuring that every child gets the right diagnosis at the right time.
