Pune: In a landmark achievement, TGH-Onco Life Cancer Centre successfully treated two patients, a 70-year-old man with lung carcinoma and a 62-year-old man having prostate cancer by using the innovative Radixact System with Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Synchrony Automatic, Real-time Motion Synchronization Technology. This marks the first time such advanced technology has been utilized for the accurate treatment of cancer in Maharashtra. Following the novel AI-based treatment approach, both patients have recovered well with this novel AI-based approach. Dr. Abhishek Purkayastha, Dr. Jyoti Mehta, Dr. Santosh Sahu, Mr. Sachin Deshmukh, patient Mr. Anantrao Raikar, and his son were present at the press conference.
70-year-old patient Mr Anantrao Raikar, a resident of Talegaon, Pune whose daily activities were hindered by breathlessness, sought help from multiple experts without success. Initially, a CT scan and later whole-body PET scan were done which showed a left-sided lung mass. A thoracoscopic Biopsy from a lung lesion confirmed the diagnosis of lung carcinoma. He received palliative chemotherapy followed by targeted therapy. Unfortunately, the response assessment PET scan showed a lymph node suggestive of disease progression which petrified the patient.
In another case, 62-year man Nanasao Ingawale from Solapur presented with lower urinary tract symptoms for the last 1 month. After Evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with prostate cancer, one of the top ten leading cancers in India. It usually affects men over 65. Recently, there has been an increase in reports of cancer in younger men in the age group of 35-44 and 55-64 residing in metropolitan cities. Both patients were found to be suitable for a synchrony-based approach for successful outcomes.
Dr Abhishek Purkayastha, Consultant, Dept of Tomotherapy and Radiation Oncology, TGH Onco-Life Cancer Centre said, “The innovative Radixact System with Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Synchrony Automatic, Real-time Motion Synchronization Technology is a precise and safer option to treat various highly mobile cancers such as lung, liver, gastrointestinal and prostate cancers. There is an X-ray panel located on one side and a detector on the other side of the system. The system is an integral part of Radiotherapy and tracks the tumor location in real-time with the help of Synchrony Respiratory Camera Array. The treatment is done in 10 to 15 minutes depending on daily set-up procedures. The AI-based Synchrony System enables real-time tracking and adjustments during radiation therapy sessions, leading to higher precision and accuracy in targeting cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The technique functions with the patient’s natural breathing by adjusting the radiation beam according to the moving tumor. Patient Anantrao Raikar was treated with normal breathing without the need to hold his breath, respiratory restriction, or compression on the abdomen ensuring maximum comfort and thus improving the quality of life.”
“The patient tolerated the treatment very well without experiencing any acute adverse effects like cardiac arrhythmias, pneumonitis, and rib pain. The patient is on regular follow-up and is clinically stable with excellent performance status. He has been advised to refrain from any kind of tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption, to take a high protein diet, and to continue with daily light routine work without taking any unnecessary stress. Not treating the patient at the right time could have led to further disease progression within the entire body making him non-curable and leading to high morbidity and eventual mortality,” said Dr Abhishek Purkayastha.
“Similarly, another patient 62-year man Nanasao Ingawale also benefitted from this promising approach. Synchrony-based IGRT is a cutting-edge technique that combines real-time imaging with precise radiation delivery. This technology synchronizes the movement of the prostate, which can shift due to natural processes such as breathing or bowel movements, with the radiation beam. The goal is to maintain accurate targeting throughout the treatment session, thereby minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This approach is safe, and precise and guarantees quick recovery with successful outcomes. The patient tolerated treatment well without any treatment gap and with no side effects. Synchrony-based IGRT represents a major leap forward in the fight against prostate cancer and ensures successful outcomes. It embodies the progress we are making in precision medicine, where treatment is tailored to the unique needs of each patient, maximizing effectiveness while minimizing harm,” said Dr Jyoti Mehta, MD Radiation and Clinical Oncologist, TGH Onco-Life Cancer Centre.
Both the patients have thanked the doctor for prompt intervention and have resumed their daily routine without any difficulties.
“At TGH-Onco-Life Cancer Centre, cutting-edge innovation meets compassionate care to provide cancer patients with the best possible treatment experience. For the first time, the center used an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Synchrony System, which revolutionized the way cancer is treated.
This advanced technology allows for precise and customized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs.
The hospital has obtained the requisite license from AERB for this novel technology. With state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated team of experts, we feel proud to set a new benchmark in cancer care. Patients can have peace of mind knowing that they are receiving top-notch care that leverages the latest advancements in cancer care concluded Dr Gaurav Jaswal, MD Radiation Oncology, Director Radiation Oncology, Onco-Life Hospitals.
