In a transformative step toward enhancing patient care and coordination across India’s premier medical institutions, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Shri JP Nadda, officially launched the ‘Inter-AIIMS Referral Portal’. This landmark initiative is aimed at streamlining the patient referral process among all All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), enabling timely, transparent, and efficient healthcare delivery.
The digital portal is designed to bring together a network of 22 AIIMS institutions across the country, promoting integrated care and ensuring that critical patients receive the right treatment at the right facility without delay.
A Technological Leap in Public Healthcare
Addressing the event, Shri JP Nadda said:
“The Inter-AIIMS Referral Portal is a major leap in India’s healthcare digitization mission. It embodies the vision of ‘One Nation, One Health System’ by facilitating seamless movement and tracking of patients across AIIMS institutions, regardless of geography. This ensures equitable access to super-specialty care while reducing the burden on individual institutions.”
The portal will serve as a centralized platform through which clinicians at one AIIMS can electronically refer patients to another AIIMS for specialized treatment, second opinions, or advanced diagnostic services. This eliminates the need for physical paperwork, minimizes patient waiting times, and improves overall resource utilization across the healthcare network.
Key Features of the Inter-AIIMS Referral Portal:
Digital Integration of 22 AIIMS: Real-time coordination among AIIMS institutions.
Seamless Referral Workflow: Structured electronic referral mechanism for super-specialty consultations and treatment.
Patient-Centric Interface: Transparent updates for patients and referring doctors.
Data-Driven Decision-Making: Real-time analytics and reports to improve healthcare planning and system performance.
Equitable Load Distribution: Balanced patient flow, reducing overcrowding at select AIIMS centers.
Transforming the AIIMS Ecosystem
The launch of this portal aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision to build a robust and interconnected digital health infrastructure under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It will also enhance patient outcomes by facilitating collaborative treatment protocols and timely intervention across specialized departments.
Senior health officials, AIIMS directors, and medical experts attended the launch, expressing optimism that this platform will become a game-changer in how India’s apex medical institutes manage referrals and patient care pathways.
A Step Toward ‘One Nation, One Health’
This initiative is part of ongoing reforms to modernize the public healthcare system and leverage digital tools to make care more accessible and efficient. The Inter-AIIMS Referral Portal will also help in creating a unified health data ecosystem, enabling evidence-based policy decisions and continuous improvement in healthcare services.
