In a move to strengthen drug regulation and ensure the availability of safe, high-quality medicines, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the state government will double the number of drug inspectors across the state. The decision is aimed at improving the monitoring of pharmaceutical manufacturing, distribution, and retail practices in India’s most populous state.

Speaking at a review meeting of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA), CM Yogi emphasized the need for a robust and transparent drug regulatory mechanism to protect public health and curb the circulation of spurious and substandard medicines.

“Ensuring the safety and quality of medicines is non-negotiable. Uttar Pradesh, being a major hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and trade, must lead by example in maintaining the highest standards of compliance,” the Chief Minister said.

Currently, the state has a limited number of drug inspectors overseeing thousands of manufacturing units, wholesalers, and pharmacies. The proposed expansion will significantly enhance inspection coverage, enable timely quality checks, and ensure better enforcement of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Officials confirmed that the recruitment process for new inspectors will begin soon, with a focus on scientific training, digital monitoring systems, and strengthening coordination with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).

The move aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader healthcare reforms, which include improving drug testing laboratories, digitalizing licensing processes, and encouraging compliance among pharma manufacturers through education and enforcement.

Experts have welcomed the announcement, noting that a stronger regulatory workforce will help boost investor confidence, protect patient safety, and enhance the reputation of Uttar Pradesh’s growing pharmaceutical industry.

With this initiative, the state aims to establish itself as a model for effective drug regulation in India, balancing industry growth with public health priorities.
