Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension, has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully treating a rare throat disorder Zenker’s Diverticulum without any surgical incision. This condition affects only one in nearly five lakh people and involves the formation of a pouch at the back of the throat where food gets trapped.

Due to this condition, patients experience difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation of food, frequent throat clearing, bad breath, unexplained weight loss, and unusual gurgling sounds from the neck. Over time, these symptoms significantly impact the patient’s daily life and overall well-being.

At Yatharth Hospital, the condition was treated using the Z-POEM (Zenker’s Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) technique, a modern, completely incision-less endoscopic procedure. In this technique, a thin endoscope is inserted through the mouth to cut the obstructing muscle responsible for blocking the food passage. Since the procedure is performed internally, there are no external cuts, stitches, or scars on the body.

This marks the first successful Z-POEM procedure in Noida, performed by Dr. Kapil Sharma, Group Director Gastroenterology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals. The patient had been suffering for the past two years from persistent difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation of food, bad breath, and significant weight loss. Despite seeking treatment at multiple places, the condition remained undiagnosed. After thorough evaluation, Zenker’s Diverticulum was confirmed, and the patient was advised major surgery elsewhere, which carried higher risks and required a prolonged recovery period.

Dr. Kapil Sharma successfully treated the patient using the Z-POEM technique without the need for major surgery. The patient experienced relief within a few hours of the procedure. Liquid diet was started the next day, and normal food intake was resumed within three days.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kapil Sharma said,
“Z-POEM has made the treatment of complex conditions like Zenker’s Diverticulum extremely simple and safe. Patients no longer need to undergo major surgery, endure excessive pain, or stay in the hospital for long durations. With timely diagnosis and advanced technology, patients can return to their normal lives much faster.”

At Yatharth Hospital, our focus is on delivering world-class medical care with minimal discomfort to patients. The successful use of incision-less endoscopic techniques highlights our dedication to innovation and compassionate healthcare.
