Given the escalating cases of skin fungal infections, The Esthetic Clinics And DAF orchestrated a collective camp that encompassed the evaluation and treatment of approximately 500 people afflicted with skin fungal infections such as Tinea corporis,( body) tinea cruris ( mainly groins ), athletes foot, tinea facei ( face), etc. Dermatologists from The Esthetic Clinics graced the occasion and also treated the patients.
Fungal infections are common skin disorders caused by various types of fungi. These microscopic organisms thrive in warm, moist environments and can be found anywhere from soil and plants to household surfaces. Fungal infections can affect different parts of the body, such as the skin, nails, scalp, and genitals. However, each type of infection presents with its unique set of symptoms and requires specific treatments.
“Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), takes a toll on the feet due to prolonged exposure to dampness. This infection typically causes itching, burning sensations, and redness between the toes or around the soles. Another frequently encountered fungal infection is jock itch (tinea cruris), characterized by a circular rash in the groin area that is often itchy or painful. Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) are another prevalent condition resulting from fungi invading the nails causing them to become discolored, thickened, and brittle over time. Ringworm (tinea corporis) is not actually caused by a worm but due to the fungus. This highly contagious infection appears as circular or ring-shaped rashes on various body parts such as arms, legs, or trunk but doesn’t manifest itself in all individuals exposed to it. Oral thrush caused by Candida yeast can develop inside your mouth or throat,” said Dr. Rinky Kapoor, Dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics.
Dr Kapoor added, “The most common symptoms of a fungal infection is an itchy rash accompanied by scaling, flaking, or blistering, odor in case of an athlete’s foot or groin jock itch. These odors become so strong that they impact one’s self-confidence and social interactions. Fungal infections can cause discomfort or pain in the affected area. A fungal nail infection may result in thickened and brittle nails that are difficult to cut. Similarly, oral thrush, a common fungal infection in the mouth can lead to soreness or difficulty swallowing. To raise awareness regarding these infections, we joined hands with DAF to focus on prompt diagnosis and treatment. 500 people afflicted with fungal infections were given treatment in the form of antifungal tablets, creams, and powders.
There is a sudden alarming rise in fungal infections that are resistant to standard antifungal treatment. One of the reasons is that many patients take self-medication, or pick up a cream advised by chemists or untrained doctors, who generally provide creams that contain steroids to relieve the symptoms temporarily but later cause severe flare and resistance. This incorrect and unregulated use of steroid-containing creams, vams inappropriate medication, not taken under the supervision of a qualified Dermatologist is creating a severe epidemic of resistant fungal infections which are becoming extremely contagious and extremely difficult to treat.
Some learnings from the event were:
By seeking correct medical attention promptly, you not only increase your chances of a faster recovery but also minimize the risk of further skin damage. Fungal infections are treatable with the correct medications. To prevent fungal infections, keep the skin dry and clean. After exercising or sweating excessively, make sure to shower with a mild soap and pat yourself dry completely. Pay extra attention to areas such as the armpits, groin, and feet that are prone to perspiration. Wearing tight clothing or non-breathable fabrics can create a breeding ground for fungi on your skin. Instead, choose clothes made from natural fibers such as cotton or linen that allow air to circulate and moisture to evaporate more easily. This can help keep your skin cool and dry, reducing the chance of fungal growth. Practice Good Foot Hygiene. Fungal infections are common on the feet due to their constant exposure to moisture inside socks and shoes. To protect against these infections, make sure your feet are kept clean and dry.
“The caregiving doctors deserve our heartfelt appreciation for arranging a profoundly enlightening camp. We gained valuable knowledge about the origins, manifestations, remedies, and preventive measures for fungal infections. We eagerly await future opportunities to attend such enriching events,” concluded the many participants.
