The Government of Mizoram has launched a statewide ‘Tobacco-Free Youth’ campaign aimed at reducing tobacco consumption among school and college students, reinforcing its commitment to building a healthier, smoke-free generation.

The campaign, spearheaded by the State Tobacco Control Cell (STCC) under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, promote behavioral change, and encourage youth participation in anti-tobacco initiatives across educational institutions.

Launching the initiative, Health Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana emphasized that Mizoram continues to have one of the highest tobacco usage rates in India, with young people forming a large proportion of new users. “Our youth are the future of the state. This campaign aims to empower them with knowledge and motivation to make informed, healthy choices,” he said.

As part of the campaign, the government will implement school-based sensitization programs, community outreach drives, social media awareness, and health education workshops. Special emphasis will be placed on declaring educational campuses ‘tobacco-free zones’ and enforcing strict compliance with

COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act), 2003 provisions.

Officials also announced collaborations with youth organizations, NGOs, and healthcare professionals to sustain the campaign’s momentum and ensure long-term impact.

Public health experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that such proactive steps are essential in addressing early-stage tobacco addiction and preventing lifestyle-related diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disorders.

The ‘Tobacco-Free Youth’ campaign aligns with India’s broader mission under the National Tobacco Control Programme to reduce tobacco prevalence by 30% by 2025, contributing to the nation’s goal of promoting a tobacco-free, healthier society
