Medica Group of Hospitals, the largest private hospital chain in Eastern India, at its flagship facility Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata cured a 70-year-old gentleman suffering from triple vessel disease (it is an extreme form of coronary artery disease (CAD). It develops when the major blood vessels supplying the heart become damaged or diseased) with the use of Rotapro Rotational Atherectomy System. The team of experienced doctors from the cardiology department and the care team of Medica joined hands together for this remarkable case. The team put in their combined efforts under the leadership of Dr. Soumya Patra, Consultant Cardiologist, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, to achieve this momentous feat on April 13, 2022.

After multiple hospitalizations, a 70-year-old man with a history of chest pain and stress was admitted to Medica Superspecialty Hospital.  Post diagnosis, his angiogram revealed Triple vessel disease (it is an extreme form of coronary artery disease (CAD). It develops when the major blood vessels supplying the heart become damaged or diseased). Most of the reputed hospitals across the city advised him to undergo Bypass Surgery. However, he refused to do Bypass Surgery and booked an appointment with Dr. Soumya Patra for his opinion. The patient’s unusually high level of diffuse calcium deposition and aneurysmal segment in the heart made the case more challenging. After consultation with the specialized team of medical experts, the patient was advised to undergo Angioplasty with the help of Rotapro Atherectomy Device. Rotapro Rotational Atherectomy System is a new technology that was recently launched in India in April 2022. Rotapro, unlike the previous peddle-based system, is operated with the hands. This advanced system uses front-cutting and stable rotation of a diamond-tipped burr to facilitate safe ablation and simplify the complex process of angioplasty, allowing patients to be discharged within 24 hours. The patient underwent a seamless angioplasty on April 13th and was discharged the following day.

On the first postoperative day, the patient was advised to follow a soft diet. After a day of surgery, he was discharged with a very positive postoperative evaluation. He is now doing well and walking without any chest discomfort, which he could not do before the procedure.

Dr. Soumya Patra, who led the operation, said, “When the patient was brought to Medica for hospitalization, he was in excruciating pain, and the operation was an absolute necessity. We chose Angioplasty with the help of Rotapro Atherectomy Device over a simple angioplasty, and that decision made the entire procedure successful. The recovery went very well because, in such procedures, the patient could be discharged from the hospital within 24 hours without any complications or sickness. The patient and his entire family are extremely pleased with the care he received. We wish him all the best in life. Medica is currently Kolkata’s first and only hospital to use the Rotapro system after its launch.”

Having set benchmarks in patient care, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, which has a world-class comprehensive department for heart failure, at the facility, in Kolkata, is widely known for its excellence in cardiac care has now added another feather to its cap, after successfully treating an aged patient from Kolkata.
