A complex, tricky and timely liver transplant carried out by the highly experienced surgeons at Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital gave a new lease of life to an Iraqi National.
New Delhi: Liver transplant is always a complex procedure, but when the case comes wrapped around in some added complications, it becomes even more tricky. A highly competent team of surgeons at Aakash Healthcare recently took up such a challenge and came out with flying colors.

Doctors at Aakash Healthcare, recently performed a complex surgical procedure on an Iraqi patient suffering from a chronic liver failure of unknown etiology, giving him a new lease of life.
Abdulazil, a 33-year-old patient (name changed) from Iraq visited the Out-Patient-Department (OPD) of Aakash Healthcare with a problem of chronic liver failure. Suffering from severe coagulopathy (bleeding disorder) and progressively worsening renal function, the Iraqi national was immediately placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. His brother 38-year-old consented to be the liver donor and his workup was fast-tracked.
Responding without wasting any time, the administrative team took up the matter and soon an emergency committee meeting was organized. And the doctor advised the patient for surgery. The result was that the patient was ready for surgery within 4 days of presentation to the hospital.

Shedding light on the details of the procedure, Dr. Ajitabh Srivastava, Director & Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital said, “on the day of surgery, the patient had features of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) with very high doses of medications to maintain blood pressure and a progressively failing liver. MODS and increased INR values in a liver failure patient present as challenges for surgery. The surgery progressed with due care taken for preventing any more factors leading to instability. He tolerated the reperfusion well. Once the new liver was placed, the patient’s physiology started changing for the better. His kidneys also took a positive turnaround and the CRRT was stopped on the first postoperative day itself.”
The complex surgery was technically demanding and enforced extensive coordination between several specialities. Post-surgery too, the Iraqi national presented a unique set of challenges, which were successfully overcome by the team. The good news is that the patient is recovering well and all ready to get discharged on the 12th-day post-surgery.
