Karjat: A 17-year-old boy was given a fresh lease of life when a successful ABOI (ABO Incompatible) kidney transplant was performed on him, despite his blood group being different from the donor, his mother. A team headed by Dr Amit Langote, Head of the Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai successfully carried out this complex ABO-incompatible (mismatched blood group) transplantation on a patient with kidney disease that led to advanced kidney failure.
Dhanraj Mendhere was suffering from kidney disease as his kidneys failed to function properly. He was on dialysis for 6-7 months. The patient’s family was going through a financial crisis. Even after facing difficulties, the patient’s mother came forward to donate a kidney and save his life. A successful ABOI (ABO Incompatible) kidney transplant was performed on him by Dr Amit Langote and his team.
Dr Amit Langote, Head of the Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “When the patient was referred to me, he was having seizures, was breathless and unconscious. Primarily, the patient was diagnosed with kidney disease. The dirt in the kidney must have reached his brain and his condition would have become serious. The child could have had fits which would be dangerous for him. In such a critical condition, it was necessary to immediately admit him and perform tests that revealed high creatine and low calcium levels. It was confirmed that his both kidneys failed and an urgent kidney transplant was the last resort. After counseling the family about transplant surgery, the mother expressed her willingness to donate a kidney. But, the mother’s blood group was B positive while the child’s blood group was A positive. For a kidney transplant, it is necessary to have the same blood group. Even though the blood group was different, the call for a kidney transplant was successfully carried out. Now, two months after surgery, the patient is doing well. The boy is now doing his daily activities like before and is appearing for his external class 12th examination.”
Dr Langote added, “The patient had no prior illness or symptoms. However, both his kidneys were weak at birth. So this patient needed a kidney transplant. This is my third kidney transplant in Karjat. We have started a dialysis center in the last one and a half years, and have the expertise and cutting-edge technology to carry out high-risk surgeries with precision, safety, and accuracy. The main objective is to provide affordable dialysis facilities to economically weaker patients. Dialysis centers make it convenient for patients as they get better quality facilities without having to travel far to other cities for treatment.”
“We were in a rude shock when my son was diagnosed with kidney disease. The doctor advised us to undergo a transplant. I thank the doctors for supporting and cooperating with us as we did not have enough money for the surgery. I expressed my desire to donate a kidney. But, since the blood group is different, surgery was difficult. However, in such a situation, doctors have saved my son’s life by performing kidney transplant surgery,” concluded the patient’s mother.
