In a concerted effort to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) from India, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda convened a virtual meeting with Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors, and Health Ministers from various states and Union Territories (UTs) on Saturday. The primary agenda was to solicit their unwavering support for the ongoing 100-day Intensified TB Elimination Campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at significantly reducing TB incidence and mortality across 347 high-focus districts in 33 states and UTs.
Call for State-Level Vigilance and Community Engagement
Minister Nadda emphasized the imperative of robust monitoring mechanisms at the state level, urging political and administrative leaders to oversee the campaign’s progress diligently. He advocated for a holistic, government-wide approach, recommending the involvement of various ministries and departments to bolster campaign activities through ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (public participation). Furthermore, he appealed to Chief Ministers to engage elected representatives, including Members of Legislative Assemblies and Councils, as well as Panchayati Raj Institutions, to galvanize community mobilization efforts.
Significant Strides in TB Reduction
Highlighting India’s progress in combating TB, Nadda noted that the rate of TB decline in the country has reached 17.7% between 2015 and 2024, effectively doubling the global average of 8.3%. Additionally, he reported a substantial 21.4% reduction in TB-related deaths over the past decade, underscoring the efficacy of the nation’s health initiatives.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Medical Supplies
Addressing concerns about the availability of TB medications, the Union Health Minister assured that states currently possess nearly two months’ worth of TB medicine stock. He further stated that the central government is proactively working to ensure an advance stockpile sufficient for at least six months, thereby guaranteeing uninterrupted treatment for patients.
Comprehensive Strategy for High-Risk Districts
The 100-day campaign is being meticulously implemented across 347 identified priority districts, where comprehensive and innovative patient-centric services are being provided. This focused approach aims to expedite the detection and treatment of TB patients in the most affected regions, aligning with the government’s commitment to a TB-free India.
Collective Commitment to a TB-Free India
The virtual meeting witnessed active participation from several state leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, among others. These dignitaries expressed their appreciation for the Union Government’s intensified efforts and pledged their support toward achieving the goal of TB elimination.
Minister Nadda concluded the session by encouraging all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to ending TB, emphasizing that with coordinated efforts and sustained dedication, the vision of a TB-free India is within reach.
