The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), India’s flagship health insurance scheme, has facilitated over 6.8 million cancer treatments since its inception, with a significant majority of beneficiaries hailing from rural areas, according to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda.

Key Highlights:

Total Cancer Treatments: Approximately 6.8 million hospital admissions for cancer-related treatments have been authorized under AB-PMJAY, amounting to ₹13,160.75 crore.

Rural Beneficiaries: A substantial 75.81% of these treatments were availed by individuals from rural regions, underscoring the scheme’s extensive reach and impact in underserved areas.

Targeted Therapies: Over 450,000 treatments, valued at more than ₹985 crore, were dedicated to targeted cancer therapies, with 76.32% of these beneficiaries residing in rural locales.

Enhanced Access to Timely Treatment:

A recent study published in The Lancet highlighted that enrollment in AB-PMJAY has significantly improved timely initiation of cancer treatment. Patients covered under the scheme experienced a 90% increase in access to treatment within 30 days of diagnosis, compared to a 30% improvement among non-enrollees.

Comprehensive Oncology Packages:

AB-PMJAY offers an extensive range of oncology services, encompassing medical, surgical, radiation, and palliative care, across 219 treatment packages. This comprehensive coverage ensures that beneficiaries receive holistic cancer care without financial burden.

Affordability of Cancer Medications:

To further alleviate the financial strain on patients, the government has established 217 AMRIT pharmacies nationwide, offering 289 oncology drugs at discounts of up to 50%. This initiative has resulted in savings of ₹6,567 crore for approximately 5.8 crore beneficiaries.

Future Initiatives:

Plans are underway to establish day care cancer centers in district hospitals, aiming to provide accessible treatment options for rural populations. Additionally, cancer treatment facilities are being expanded across new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other institutions to further enhance healthcare infrastructure.

The Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY scheme continues to play a pivotal role in transforming cancer care in India, particularly in rural areas, by ensuring timely and affordable treatment for millions.
