In a healthcare landscape defined by both legacy and disruption, few families embody the balance of tradition and transformation like the Vaziranis. From pioneering accessible diagnostics to reshaping renal care, two generations of leadership continue to chart new frontiers in India’s medtech sector. At the helm stands Suresh Vazirani, Founder Chairman of the Erba Transasia Group, whose vision of democratizing diagnostics laid the foundation for one of India’s most respected healthcare brands. His son, Nikhil Vazirani, now CTO of the Group, is driving global innovation through AI-powered platforms, molecular diagnostics, and automation—carrying the family’s ethos forward with bold technological strides.

Mr. Suresh Vazirani – Founder Chairman, Erba Transasia Group

What emotions or reflections do you have about passing the entrepreneurial torch to the next generation in your family?

Watching Nikhil step into a leadership role has been a deeply emotional and fulfilling journey for me. As a founder, your business is more than a venture—it’s a lifelong mission. To see that mission being continued with integrity, innovation, and a global vision by the next generation is both reassuring and inspiring. I feel immense pride not just in the growth of Erba Transasia, but in seeing the values of compassion, perseverance, and commitment to accessible healthcare being carried forward. It’s not just about passing the torch—it’s about watching it shine brighter.

Mr. Nikhil Vazirani – CTO, Erba Transasia Group

You come from a strong healthcare legacy—what core values or philosophies from your first-generation leadership have you carried forward in your journey?

The most important values I’ve inherited from my father are commitment to quality, accessibility, and innovation in diagnostics. He has always emphasized putting the patient first and democratizing healthcare by making high-quality diagnostics affordable. Equally, his integrity, belief in people-centric leadership, and hands-on approach have greatly influenced my own style. These foundational principles are what continue to guide me, even as we introduce cutting-edge technologies and expand globally.

What were the biggest challenges you faced stepping into a leadership role in a legacy business, and how did you overcome them?

Stepping into a business with such a strong legacy can be both inspiring and intimidating. One of the biggest challenges was finding the balance between preserving our identity and bringing about change. There were high expectations, not just from the market but internally as well. I chose to embrace a collaborative approach—listening more, learning constantly, and empowering cross-functional teams. My international exposure and early leadership roles, including heading our European subsidiary, helped me understand diverse markets and build confidence early on.

How have you introduced innovation or transformation into the business while maintaining its foundational identity?

At Erba Transasia, innovation is about enhancing our legacy to meet tomorrow’s challenges. The foundational identity of our organization has always been centered around accessible, high-quality diagnostics. My goal has been to carry this mission forward while leveraging automation, digital transformation, and smart diagnostics to future-proof our offerings.

We’ve launched several next-generation platforms: Innovations like the Erba MX 8 Real-Time PCR system and the AI-enabled Laura XL urine analyzer are designed not only for accuracy and speed but also for accessibility in decentralized and resource-limited settings—staying true to our philosophy of democratizing healthcare.

Equally important has been our effort to modernize customer experience and training through platforms like ErbaLIMS – our new Learning Management System (LMS). These tools allow labs of all sizes to optimize performance, train staff faster, and operate more autonomously.

Innovation at Erba isn’t driven by trends—it’s driven by purpose. We’re integrating AI, ML, and real-time analytics to transform diagnostics from reactive testing to proactive, patient-centric insights—while keeping affordability and usability at the core. In doing so, we are redefining what’s possible, yet never losing sight of why we started: to make world-class diagnostics accessible to all.

In your view, how is the healthcare industry evolving, and what role do you see your generation playing in shaping its future?

The healthcare industry is evolving rapidly—driven by data, digitalization, and decentralization. There’s a growing need for personalized, faster, and more accessible diagnostics. Our generation is uniquely positioned to harness this momentum by integrating technology with purpose. We understand both legacy and agility, tradition and transformation. I see our role as bridging gaps—whether geographic, economic, or technological—while building scalable, sustainable solutions that serve the broader health ecosystem.

Looking ahead, how do you plan to expand or diversify the legacy you’ve inherited—and what message would you like to give to future generations of healthcare entrepreneurs?

Looking ahead, our focus is to make Erba one of the top five global IVD companies. We’re expanding our product portfolio in haematology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics, while strengthening training and support infrastructure in regions like Asia and Latin America. My message to future healthcare entrepreneurs is simple—solve real problems with integrity and purpose. Technology is an enabler, but empathy and persistence will define your legacy. Don’t be afraid to take risks, but always stay rooted in your values.
