A Legacy of Lifesaving Innovation: How Two Generations Are Transforming Dialysis Care in India

In 1987, Mr. Ravi Vazirani founded Atlantic Biomedical to address the lack of reliable dialysis solutions in Western India. He pioneered India’s first double-stream bicarbonate-based dialysis solution and developed indigenous alternatives to costly imported systems—redefining renal care through innovation and affordability. Today, his son Varun Vazirani leads the company with the same mission-driven ethos. At just 30, Varun is driving expansion with next-gen solutions like Renacart and Renabag, focused on safety, efficiency, and indigenization. Together, their journeys reflect a powerful legacy of transforming dialysis care—where experience fuels progress and every patient matters.
Mr. Ravi Vazirani – Founder, Atlantic
Biomedical Pvt. Ltd.

Looking back at the journey of building Atlantic Biomedical from the ground up, what motivated you to step into an uncharted space like dialysis care in India—and how does it feel to see your vision carried forward by the next generation?
When I began this journey in the mid-1980s, dialysis care in India was still rudimentary—especially in Western India. Hospitals depended on acetate-based solutions transported from other parts of the country, often facing delays and causing discomfort for patients. I saw not just a logistical gap, but a deeply human one. That was the moment I knew this wasn’t just a business opportunity—it was a responsibility.
In 1987, we became the first in India to manufacture double-stream bicarbonate-based dialysis solutions—clinically superior and patient-friendly. Our mission soon expanded to include indigenous alternatives to imported reprocessing systems and supporting dialysis infrastructure in countries like Mauritius.
To now see my son, Varun, lead this legacy with clarity and innovation is deeply gratifying. He’s not just continuing the journey—he’s evolving it with vision and integrity.

Mr. Varun Vazirani – Director,
Atlantic Biomedical Pvt. Ltd.

What were the biggest challenges you faced stepping into a leadership role in a legacy business, and how did you overcome them?
Taking the helm at Atlantic Biomedical meant balancing heritage with innovation. A key challenge was growing our presence in a competitive market. We responded by expanding our product portfolio with advanced solutions like the Renabag and Renacart Cartridge, which eliminate microbial contamination risks during dialysis.
We also modernized our RENACLEAN® Dialyzer Reprocessing System with cloud integration, enabling remote data monitoring and improving patient safety. Another major hurdle was navigating India’s regulatory complexity. Achieving global certifications like WHO GMP, ISO 13485, and CE marking helped us meet international standards and unlock global markets—signalling our unwavering commitment to quality.
In your view, how is the healthcare industry evolving, and what role do you see your generation playing in shaping its future?
Healthcare is being transformed by technology, with a growing emphasis on Make in India. Indigenous manufacturing is now essential—not just to reduce imports but to ensure faster, more reliable access to critical equipment.
While dialysis has advanced since my father’s time, it remains underpenetrated—especially in rural India, where cost and access remain barriers. Government schemes like the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme are helping bridge that gap.
Our generation’s role is to meet this challenge head-on: innovating for affordability, building robust distribution networks, and ensuring our solutions, like the Renabag and Renacart, directly impact patient care—while safeguarding against global supply disruptions.
How have you introduced innovation into the business while preserving its foundational identity?
The core identity of Atlantic Biomedical has always been solving real problems with indigenous innovation. Staying true to that, we introduced the Renacart/Renabag cartridge system—an import-substitute that enables online preparation of fresh bicarbonate, eliminating microbial risks and stability issues common with conventional methods.
Dialysis requires an acidic (Part A) and alkaline (Part B) solution. Traditional Part B powders degrade over time, reducing efficacy. Our cartridge system ensures stable, contamination-free dialysis fluid preparation—delivering better patient outcomes.
We continue to invest in R&D with a clear vision: to expand globally, while ensuring dialysis remains safe, effective, and accessible—especially in underserved regions.
