Strategic Collaboration to Strengthen Biomedical Innovation and Human Performance Research
New Delhi:
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), through its Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh. This strategic partnership is focused on conducting clinical trials and advanced research in the field of biomedical devices and supplements intended to improve human performance in extreme environments such as high altitudes, deserts, and combat zones.
Bridging Defence Innovation with Clinical Validation
This collaboration represents a powerful convergence of defence technology and medical science. While DIPAS brings deep expertise in the physiology of human performance under physical and environmental stress, AIIMS-Rishikesh contributes its robust clinical trial infrastructure and research excellence. The MoU aims to translate defence-driven biomedical innovations into field-ready, clinically validated solutions that can be deployed for both military and civilian use.
Focus Areas: Wearables, Supplements, and Monitoring Systems
Under the partnership, the institutions will jointly work on developing and clinically validating biomedical devices such as wearables, health-monitoring systems, and nutritional supplements. These technologies are designed to support endurance, cognitive function, faster recovery, and physical safety for personnel operating under high-stress and environmentally challenging conditions.
Enhancing National Capabilities Through Applied Research
Senior officials from DRDO emphasized that the collaboration will fast-track the development and testing of technologies to support India’s armed forces and frontline responders. By combining DIPAS’s innovation pipeline with AIIMS-Rishikesh’s clinical rigor, the MoU is expected to yield results that can improve quality of life and performance in adverse conditions, while also opening avenues for commercialization and broader healthcare applications.
Ceremonial Signing and Institutional Commitment
The MoU signing ceremony was held on July 5, 2025, and was shared by DRDO through its official social media platforms. The event was attended by key representatives from both institutions, who highlighted the importance of collaborative innovation in meeting the evolving demands of modern warfare, healthcare, and national preparedness.
