The budget presented by the Government of Uttar Pradesh reflects a very strong and forward-looking commitment to strengthen the delivery of healthcare and medical education across each and every state. The allocation made by the government of ₹37,956 crore for the medical, health, and family welfare, along with the ₹14,997 crore for the medical education, underlines the focus of the government on building the robust public health infrastructure and clinical capacity as well.
The provision given by the government of Rs 1,023 crore for the establishment and operation of 14 new medical colleges is an important step to address the shortage of trained medical professionals. With around 81 medical colleges operating in the state currently 45 government and 36 private the expanding role of the private providers will be very crucial in complementing the public institutions through a quality medical education, advanced clinical training and exposure to complex management of cases.
Private healthcare providers have continuously contributed to delivering high quality care not only in the regular clinical bases but also in managing the complex and rare diseases. The allocation proposed by the government of Rs 130 crore for the free treatment of incurable and rare diseases creates an opportunity for collaboration, leveraging the expertise, infrastructure and innovation which is available in the private hospitals Effective implementation, digital integration, and a good role for private providers will also be key to translating these budgetary allocations into good, measurable, and equitable health outcomes as well.
