P.D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC announced its support for ‘Race for 7’, as the official Medical Partner. Organized by the Organization of Rare Diseases India, ‘Race for 7’ is an annual awareness and fundraising event that involves a 7000 meter run to raise awareness about 7000 documented rare diseases. The race takes place simultaneously in Mumbai, Bangalore and Washington DC. During the marathon, Hinduja Hospital provided its state of the art medical facilities and services to runners in Mumbai. A total of 3 Ambulances were stationed at different spots along the race route, with the medical team headed by Dr. Khusrav Bajan, Consultant Physician & Intensivist, Department of Medicine and Critical Care and was also supported by 4 doctors, 3 male nurses, Casualty coordinator and 2 physiotherapists.

 It is estimated that 70 million patients in India suffer from rare diseases, wherein, every 1 out of 20 Indians suffers from a rare disease. Rare diseases include inherited cancers, autoimmune disorders, congenital malformations, and infectious diseases amongst others include Hemangiomas, Hirschsprung disease, Gaucher disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophies and Lysosomal Storage Disorders. Often life threatening, a delay in medical intervention and the availability of expensive treatment options lead to most patients and their families facing major hurdles in rare disease management. 

Expressing his support, Mr. Joy Chakraborty, Chief Operating Officer, P. D. Hinduja Hospital said, “We are pleased to partner with the ORDI and support them in their mission of providing aid to those suffering with rare diseases in our country. Through this initiative, Hinduja Hospital aims to go one-step further and play a crucial role in providing the best of its quality services to help bring to light the current incidence of rare diseases and to empower patients and their families suffering from these rare diseases”.
