New Delhi, : India’s medical technology (MedTech) sector has welcomed the potential trade opportunities emerging from the proposed India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), while raising concerns over the lack of mutual regulatory recognition, which could limit the agreement’s full benefits.

Industry stakeholders note that the FTA could open new avenues for market access, export growth, and supply chain diversification, strengthening bilateral trade in medical devices and healthcare technologies between the two countries.

However, experts have highlighted that the absence of harmonized regulatory frameworks and mutual recognition of standards remains a critical challenge. Without alignment in certification, quality standards, and approval processes, companies may continue to face duplicative compliance requirements and delays in market entry.

The MedTech industry has emphasized the need for regulatory convergence and streamlined approval pathways to ensure that trade agreements translate into practical and scalable business opportunities. Stakeholders are advocating for provisions that enable mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) and greater collaboration between regulatory authorities.

Officials suggest that addressing these regulatory gaps could significantly enhance ease of doing business, reduce compliance costs, and accelerate the availability of innovative medical technologies in both markets.

The FTA is also expected to support technology exchange, investment flows, and collaboration in healthcare innovation, provided regulatory barriers are effectively managed.

Experts believe that a balanced approach—combining trade liberalization with regulatory alignment—will be key to unlocking the full potential of the India–New Zealand partnership in the MedTech sector.

The development underscores the growing importance of policy coherence and regulatory harmonization in shaping the future of global healthcare trade.
