India and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral healthcare cooperation with a strong focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), digital health, telemedicine, and resilient healthcare supply chains during a high level meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) in Geneva.
Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda held bilateral discussions with Sweden’s Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, to explore collaborative opportunities in healthcare innovation, public health systems, and digital healthcare transformation.
The discussions emphasized strengthening cooperation in tackling antimicrobial resistance, which continues to be one of the world’s most critical public health threats. According to global health estimates, AMR is currently associated with nearly 1.27 million deaths annually worldwide, while India remains among the countries with a high burden of antibiotic resistance.
Both nations also discussed expanding digital health initiatives, including telemedicine platforms, healthcare interoperability, and technology driven healthcare delivery models. India’s Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has already generated over 75 crore ABHA health IDs, making it one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems.
The ministers further explored opportunities to strengthen resilient healthcare supply chains and promote healthcare innovation partnerships between Indian and Swedish healthcare industries, research institutions, and technology providers.
India and Sweden have steadily expanded collaboration across healthcare, life sciences, medical technology, and sustainable innovation under their broader bilateral strategic partnership framework.
The meeting reinforces India’s growing international healthcare collaborations aimed at strengthening digital healthcare infrastructure, improving public health preparedness, and advancing global healthcare innovation initiatives.
