Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate healthcare infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹1,000 crore at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of advanced medical services, research capabilities, and patient care facilities in North India.
Among the flagship projects is the Advanced Neuroscience Centre, developed at an estimated cost of ₹490 crore. The state-of-the-art facility, approved in 2017, began offering outpatient services on April 20, 2026, and is expected to significantly enhance neurological and neurosurgical care for patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and other neighboring regions.
Construction of the Advanced Neuroscience Centre commenced in 2020 and was initially scheduled for inauguration during PGIMER’s convocation ceremony on April 30 by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. However, the inauguration was postponed and will now be part of the larger virtual launch by the Prime Minister.
The new neuroscience facility is designed to support advanced diagnosis, treatment, research, and training in neurological disorders, including stroke, epilepsy, brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, spinal disorders, and complex neurosurgical conditions. Healthcare experts note that neurological diseases are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, making investments in specialized neuroscience infrastructure increasingly important.
PGIMER Chandigarh is one of India’s premier tertiary-care medical institutions, serving lakhs of patients annually and functioning as a major center for medical education, research, and specialized healthcare services. The institute receives referrals from multiple states and remains a critical component of the country’s public healthcare ecosystem.
The broader package of projects worth nearly ₹1,000 crore is expected to strengthen patient capacity, modernize clinical infrastructure, and improve access to high-end healthcare services. Experts believe such investments will help address growing healthcare demands while reducing patient wait times for specialized treatment.
Healthcare analysts note that India’s healthcare infrastructure expansion is being driven by rising disease burden, increasing demand for advanced medical care, and the need to strengthen tertiary healthcare institutions. Investments in medical research and specialty centres are also critical for improving clinical outcomes and fostering innovation.
The inauguration reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure through targeted investments in leading medical institutions. Officials believe the new facilities will enhance patient care, support medical research, and contribute to the development of highly skilled healthcare professionals.
With the launch of these projects, PGIMER is expected to further consolidate its position as a leading center for advanced healthcare, medical education, and clinical research in India.
