Maharashtra’s Raigad district has been designated as a ‘Model District’ under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), marking a significant achievement in the state’s ongoing digital health transformation efforts. The recognition highlights Raigad’s progress in implementing digital healthcare infrastructure and promoting seamless health information exchange across public healthcare facilities.
A key milestone behind the designation is the successful implementation of ABDM-enabled Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS) across all 383 government health facilities in the district. The initiative has enabled healthcare providers to digitize patient records, streamline workflows, and improve healthcare service delivery through interoperable digital platforms.
State health authorities are also working to onboard more private hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and healthcare providers onto ABDM-compliant systems, further strengthening the district’s integrated digital healthcare ecosystem.
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, launched by the Government of India, aims to create a unified digital health infrastructure that allows secure access to and sharing of health records through the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). The programme is designed to improve continuity of care, reduce paperwork, enhance efficiency, and empower citizens with greater control over their health information.
Healthcare experts believe digital health platforms play a critical role in modernizing healthcare systems by enabling better coordination among providers, reducing duplication of diagnostic tests, and improving patient outcomes. The adoption of electronic health records and digital healthcare services is also expected to support preventive care, telemedicine, and population health management.
Raigad’s achievement reflects Maharashtra’s leadership in implementing digital health initiatives and aligns with the broader national vision of creating a connected, patient-centric healthcare ecosystem. Public health specialists note that widespread adoption of ABDM can improve healthcare accessibility, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, by enabling seamless exchange of medical information across facilities.
Officials stated that the district’s recognition as a Model District will serve as a benchmark for other regions seeking to accelerate digital health adoption. The initiative is expected to support data-driven healthcare planning while enhancing patient experience and operational efficiency.
With all government health facilities now integrated into ABDM-enabled platforms and private sector onboarding underway, Raigad is emerging as a model for digital healthcare implementation, demonstrating how technology can transform healthcare delivery and improve access to quality care.
