India has crossed the milestone of more than 5 lakh organ donation pledges, reflecting growing public awareness and support for organ and tissue donation across the country, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The achievement marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to address the persistent gap between the demand for organs and their availability for transplantation.

The ministry stated that the Government of India remains committed to strengthening the country’s organ donation and transplantation framework through sustained awareness campaigns, enhanced institutional capacities, improved coordination mechanisms and expanded access to transplantation services. The milestone is expected to provide momentum to ongoing efforts aimed at increasing donor registrations and encouraging families to support organ donation.

India faces a substantial shortage of organs for transplantation despite a growing number of patients requiring life saving procedures. Official estimates indicate that nearly 1.8 lakh patients require kidney transplants annually, while demand for liver, heart, lung and corneal transplants also continues to rise. However, only a fraction of these requirements are currently met due to limited organ availability.

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), which coordinates organ donation activities across the country, has been actively promoting deceased organ donation and streamlining transplant processes. Recent policy reforms, including the removal of the upper age limit for organ recipients and simplification of registration procedures, have been introduced to improve access and encourage greater participation in organ donation programmes.

India has also witnessed a steady increase in deceased organ donation over the past decade. According to health ministry data, the country recorded more than 1,000 deceased organ donors annually in recent years, contributing to thousands of life-saving transplants. However, India’s organ donation rate remains below many developed nations, underscoring the need for continued public awareness and healthcare system strengthening.

Healthcare experts note that a single deceased donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve many more through tissue donation, including corneas, skin and bone tissues. Increased public participation is therefore considered crucial to reducing waiting lists and improving transplant outcomes.

The ministry emphasized that awareness generation remains a key pillar of the national strategy. Through campaigns led by NOTTO, state health departments, hospitals and civil society organizations, efforts are being made to encourage individuals to pledge organ donation and educate communities about the importance of transplantation.

As India advances toward a more robust and equitable transplantation ecosystem, the crossing of the 5 lakh pledge mark highlights growing public engagement with organ donation and reinforces the country’s commitment to saving lives through improved access to organ and tissue transplantation services.
