The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a comprehensive heatwave safety protocol for schools to safeguard students, teachers and staff amid rising temperatures and increasingly frequent extreme heat events. The guidelines aim to minimize the adverse impact of heatwaves on children’s health, education and overall well-being.

According to an official government statement, schools across the state have been directed to implement preventive measures and create awareness among students, parents and the wider school community through “dos and don’ts” posters, educational campaigns and safety advisories. The initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to strengthen preparedness against climate related health risks.

The protocol includes measures such as ensuring adequate drinking water availability, promoting regular hydration, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, improving ventilation in classrooms and sensitizing school staff to identify and respond to heat related illnesses. Schools have also been advised to educate students and parents about recognizing symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and adopting appropriate preventive measures.

The move comes amid increasing concerns over the impact of extreme heat on public health. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and public health experts, heatwaves have become more frequent and intense across several parts of India in recent years. Children are considered particularly vulnerable to heat related illnesses due to their physiological sensitivity and prolonged exposure during school hours.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified extreme heat as a growing public health threat, with risks including dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and worsening of existing health conditions. Experts emphasize that schools play a critical role in protecting children from heat related health emergencies through awareness, preparedness and timely intervention.

Public health specialists have welcomed the Uttar Pradesh government’s proactive approach, noting that school based heat action plans can significantly reduce health risks while ensuring continuity of education during extreme weather conditions. They also stressed the importance of community awareness and coordinated response mechanisms in mitigating the impact of heatwaves.

The latest guidelines reflect the growing recognition of climate change as a public health challenge and underscore the need for adaptive strategies to protect vulnerable populations. By strengthening heatwave preparedness in educational institutions, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to create safer learning environments and reduce the health burden associated with extreme temperatures.
