The National Health Authority and the Government of Goa have held high level discussions to accelerate the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), with a focus on expanding digital health services, improving healthcare access and leveraging health data for evidence based public health planning.

Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority, met Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant to review the progress of flagship healthcare initiatives in the state and explore opportunities to further strengthen Goa’s digital healthcare ecosystem.

According to officials, the discussions focused on enhancing the implementation of AB-PMJAY, India’s largest publicly funded health insurance programme, and accelerating the adoption of digital health technologies under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The meeting also examined opportunities for utilizing anonymized health data to support healthcare planning, improve disease surveillance systems and strengthen public health decision making.

The leaders reviewed Goa’s progress in implementing the digital health mission, including the adoption of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA), digitization of health records, integration of healthcare facilities and the expansion of digital health services. Officials emphasized that interoperable digital health systems can improve healthcare accessibility, continuity of care and public health preparedness.

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) currently provides annual health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family to eligible beneficiaries and remains one of the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance programmes. Nationally, the scheme has issued more than 40 crore Ayushman cards, while facilitating millions of hospital admissions across public and private healthcare facilities.

Similarly, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has emerged as one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems. According to official data, more than 80 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) have been created, while over 100 crore digital health records have been linked nationwide. The mission aims to establish a seamless, interoperable and patient centric digital healthcare infrastructure across India.

A key focus of the meeting was the potential use of health data analytics to strengthen disease surveillance and healthcare planning. Public health experts note that integrated digital health systems can significantly improve outbreak detection, resource allocation and evidence based policymaking, particularly in the context of emerging infectious diseases and non communicable disease management.

Healthcare policy experts have welcomed the continued collaboration between the National Health Authority and state governments, emphasizing that digital health infrastructure and data driven healthcare systems are critical components of achieving universal health coverage and strengthening healthcare resilience.

The discussions underscore the growing importance of digital public health infrastructure in India and reflect the government’s broader efforts to integrate health insurance, digital health records and population health management into a unified healthcare ecosystem.
