The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints alleging violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act). The regulator announced the action through an official post on X, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening food safety compliance across India’s rapidly growing quick commerce sector.
According to FSSAI, the notices were issued after receiving several consumer complaints related to alleged violations under the FSS Act. While the regulator has not disclosed the specific nature of each complaint, it said the action forms part of its ongoing surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
The development comes as India’s quick commerce market continues to expand rapidly, increasing the need for stricter oversight of food storage, labelling, handling and distribution practices. FSSAI has intensified enforcement in recent months, taking action against misleading food labels, false health claims and violations of food safety standards by manufacturers and online food businesses.
Established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI is responsible for regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food products to ensure they meet prescribed safety and quality standards. The authority regularly conducts inspections, surveillance and enforcement actions to safeguard consumer interests.
Food safety experts welcomed the regulator’s action, stating that digital grocery and quick-commerce platforms must maintain the same standards of compliance as conventional food retailers. They noted that robust quality control, proper storage practices and timely grievance redressal are essential to maintaining consumer trust as online food delivery and instant commerce continue to grow.
The latest notices underscore FSSAI’s continued focus on strengthening regulatory compliance and consumer protection, reinforcing the importance of food safety standards across both offline and digital retail channels.
