Global food and nutrition company Nestlé is developing specialised nutrition products for people using GLP-1 weight-loss medicines, using artificial intelligence and nutrition science to identify nutrient combinations that may help address challenges associated with rapid weight loss, including loss of lean muscle mass. The company is analysing clinical research and consumer data to develop products tailored to users of medicines such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound. Nestlé’s innovation efforts focus on areas including protein intake, muscle preservation, digestive health, micronutrient adequacy and hunger management. Reuters reported that the company sees the expanding GLP-1 user base as a new growth opportunity for its nutrition portfolio. ESM Magazine, Business Standard

Among its recent products, Nestlé has introduced Boost Advanced Nutrition Shake, containing 35 grams of protein, to support muscle maintenance during weight loss. The company has also expanded protein-focused offerings, including Milo PRO High Protein, while its Vital Pursuit range has targeted consumers using GLP-1 weight-management medicines. RTÉ, Axios

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasing role in the company’s product development process. Nestlé’s internal platform, Food Genie, uses data from approximately 120,000 recipes to help analyse and optimise formulations. The company is also using AI to review scientific research, identify potential nutrient combinations and analyse consumer trends before products reach the market. The Irish News

The company had already established a dedicated GLP-1 nutrition support platform in the United States, offering information and nutritional solutions across areas such as muscle preservation, gut health, hydration, micronutrient intake and weight management. Nestlé has positioned nutrition support for GLP-1 users as a strategic innovation area within its broader health science portfolio. Nestlé Official Press Release

The growing focus on specialised nutrition reflects concerns that significant appetite suppression and reduced food intake among some GLP-1 users may increase the risk of inadequate protein, micronutrient and fibre intake, as well as loss of lean mass. As the use of weight-loss medicines expands globally, Nestlé is seeking to position nutrition products as complementary support alongside pharmacological weight-management treatment. FoodNavigator
