Healthcare Vision
Health Education on Hip Preservation.
Hip preservation is the dream project of Dr N K Magu. He has treated thousands of patients of hip disorders to preserve their hips and prevented patients from undergoing hip replacements. Through this article, Dr Magu desires to make people aware that Joint replacement is not the only option to treat hip diseases. A number of hip disorders like neglected femoral neck fractures can be treated with standard technically sound methods of fixing fractures. Also, if fixation with screws fails, hip can still be preserved and Joint replacement avoided. Many of diseases can be prevented to develop secondary arthritis and if so, joint replacement can still be avoided.
Prof Magu desires to educate people that prevention is the essential component of treatment of a disease. Hence if we take a balanced diet, live an active physical life, perform Yoga and physical exercises, sit in sun for half an hour every day, do not smoke & also do not take alcohol, most of the diseases including commonly seen hip fractures, and conditions like back ache, body aches can be prevented and treated In simple words hip joint is a ball and socket joint wherein the ball articulates within the socket of the hip. It is a very stable joint of the body as the ball is deeply located in the socket and is surrounded by strong ligaments and muscles. The joint is versatile because a wide range of motion in almost all the directions can be performed like sitting, squatting on toes, sitting cross leg position to perform prayers, running, jumping, performing Ballet dances and various other sports activities. Of the various day to to-day movements, squatting on toes and sitting in cross leg position (position of prayer) is very important for Indians and the people of Indian continent. When our natural God given joint is replaced with an artificial joint, this is called as “Hip replacement”. The reader will be surprised to know that a patient after hip replacement cannot squat on toes, he cannot sit in cross legged position, his level of activity decreases, he is advised to walk with a stick in opposite hand, not to run, and patients advised not to perform vigorous activities like sports etc. A young and a middle age patient who has undergone replacement is exposed to complications like loosening of implant, dislocation of joint, pain, infection and bone destruction. Hence to cure the symptoms of loosening, the replaced artificial joint has to be replaced with another artificial joint, and the story goes on, “Once a replacement always a replacement”.
The patients should explore all possibilities to keep their hip joint healthy and protected and ask the treating surgeon “Can you treat my disease with a method that heals the pathology and also preserves my “God given hip Joint”. Prof Magu further enlightens people “there is unanimity amongst all orthopaedic surgeons of the world that patient’s own viable hip lasts the whole life” and there is no material which can match the quality of human bone in terms of strength, elasticity and other properties.
Present at the bottom are few X-Ray picture of hip disorders were in replacement has been avoided & patient’s own hip has been preserved to carry forward normal pain free day to day activities.
Most important priority if you were Health Minister
The Govt should declare health as an industry and ensure the availability of free food and healthcare services to all the citizens as their fundamental right.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan should be given a practical push in every nook & corner of the country by educating people and industrial units to prevent diseases.
Shall promote “make in India” in manufacturing all kinds of quality medical equipment and tools to save billions of dollars being drained outside the country in making such purchases. This will in turn provide affordable treatment and also generate employment.
Dr Magu says “He will create a system of a proper referral of patients for quality treatment. Taking such steps would also ensure better relationship between the Doctors & the society.
India is rich in forests, the real wealth of the country. Hence, He will give special attention to research at undergraduate level itself for the growth of medicine and alternative systems of treatment.
