Maharashtra is planning to establish a state-level healthcare innovation platform aimed at improving service quality, strengthening healthcare standards and developing practical solutions to address the needs of local communities. The proposed initiative, known as a “Living Lab,” will encourage collaboration between public authorities, healthcare institutions, technology innovators and other stakeholders.
The initiative, conceptualised by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeks to improve healthcare delivery while supporting professional skill development and employment opportunities across the state, according to an official release.
The proposed platform will focus on understanding region-specific healthcare challenges and identifying approaches that can be tested within the existing health system. Community participation will play an important role in developing solutions that respond to the actual requirements of patients and healthcare providers.
The initiative is expected to bring together government departments, private healthcare organisations, academic institutions, innovators and development partners. Their combined expertise will support efforts to improve treatment pathways, strengthen coordination and encourage the adoption of effective healthcare practices.
Emerging technologies are also expected to contribute to the programme. Areas such as artificial intelligence, digital health, healthcare data and precision medicine will be explored to identify opportunities for improving service delivery and healthcare outcomes.
Another key priority is to connect private-sector expertise with public healthcare requirements. Collaboration among different stakeholders could help develop solutions that are practical, affordable and accessible to communities with varying healthcare needs.
The Living Lab will also provide a framework for evaluating new healthcare approaches, reviewing evidence and expanding successful models where they can deliver measurable improvements. By encouraging local participation and shared responsibility, the initiative aims to build stronger links between healthcare innovators, frontline workers and existing health services.
The Manyata initiative of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) has been cited as an example of a quality-improvement approach that can complement public healthcare efforts, particularly in maternal health. The MSD for Mothers initiative is coordinating partners involved in developing this collaborative model.
Through partnerships and evidence-based implementation, Maharashtra aims to encourage healthcare innovations that can be translated into sustainable improvements. The proposed platform is intended to support better healthcare quality, stronger service standards and more responsive health services across the state.
