The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai is expected to begin hospital services with 150 beds in January 2027, marking a major milestone in the development of the long-awaited tertiary healthcare institution in Tamil Nadu. AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP I. S. Inbadurai confirmed the first-phase plan after meeting AIIMS Madurai Director Dr. Vir Singh Negi, who briefed him on construction progress at the Thoppur campus.
The development follows the Union government’s submission before the Madras High Court on September 17 that full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services would commence on January 1, 2027. While the court submission specified the OPD timeline, the subsequent announcement by Inbadurai provided an update on the proposed 150-bed first phase.
According to the Centre’s status report, overall project completion was expected to reach 59% by the end of September 2026. Phase I construction was reported to be 88% complete, while Phase II had reached 35% completion. The institute’s construction has entered its final stages, according to the MP’s statement.
AIIMS Madurai’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019, but construction began only in May 2024. The project is largely financed through a Japanese development loan.
Academic activities have already progressed at the institute. Five batches of MBBS students, who had previously been accommodated at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College, were shifted to the Thoppur campus by August 31, 2026. The institute has continued its academic operations while infrastructure development proceeds.
The start of hospital services is expected to strengthen access to specialised healthcare for Madurai and surrounding districts, potentially reducing the need for some patients to travel to other cities for tertiary treatment. The actual range of clinical departments and services available at launch will depend on operational readiness and official announcements.
The January 2027 timeline represents an important step for a project that has faced delays since its foundation stone was laid. Progress will now be measured by the commencement of OPD services, the activation of inpatient beds and the phased completion of the remaining campus infrastructure.
