AIIMS Patna has developed a Government of India patented indigenous tubular brain retractor designed to improve the precision and safety of minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures while significantly reducing treatment costs. The innovation is expected to enhance access to advanced brain surgeries by offering a cost effective alternative to imported surgical devices.

Developed by the Department of Neurosurgery, the patented device is engineered to function as both a floating and fixed tubular retractor, enabling neurosurgeons to adapt its use based on the complexity of the procedure. The retractor is also compatible with neuronavigation and robotic surgical platforms, allowing surgeons to achieve 1–2 mm precision while operating on delicate and deep seated brain structures.

Unlike conventional open brain surgery, the indigenous device creates a narrow surgical corridor, reducing manipulation of healthy brain tissue. According to AIIMS Patna, this minimally invasive approach can lower surgical trauma, blood loss and the risk of postoperative neurological complications while supporting faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.

The institute estimates that the device can be manufactured at 80–90% lower cost than imported alternatives, potentially reducing the overall cost of minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures by 30-40%. This could make advanced brain surgery more accessible, particularly for patients from economically weaker sections.

Healthcare experts say the innovation represents a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in medical technology, reducing import dependence while strengthening India’s indigenous medtech ecosystem. The patented brain retractor is expected to support safer neurosurgical procedures and expand access to advanced neurological care across the country.
